Well, that whole episode lasted a month, but it really did a number on my brain so to speak. I was terrified of death and I prayed constantly to my Lord and to my deceased grandparents to NOT take me, that I was not ready to leave my wonderful husband and babies, as I sit here now, it brings me to tears because I am in that state again. I seen a psychologist in May and all he wanted to do was give me Prozac which I totally did not want, so I never went back. Lately, I have had terrible bubbles, not really gas pains so to speak because it doesn't really hurt, but it is very annoying. I can't relate it to any food at all either. This again terrifies me that something is wrong with me. I never expected to feel this way or be this terrified, but I am. I also know I have another surgery waiting for me due to a rather large hernia on the right side of my stomach, and that scares me too. I would love to have some insight from others who are farther out than me who can help me to realize that I am not going to die from me having this surgery. I literally have a couple of mantras on the front of my fridge that tell me 'no grazing/no milk/no sugar' '5 proteins/vitamins/small meals'. And if that doesn't work, then I watch the clock and become very structured about when I will let myself have a meal. It helps me tremendously to have proteins only until about 2 PM. It seems if I start in the morning, I eat all day long. And this darn last 50 is the most stubborn isn't it? Hope this helps. In fact, you may have been hypOthyroid then with a TSH over 3. You need to have FT3 and FT4 tested....also TPO and TSI antibodies. Any family history of autoimmune disorders in your family? Rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disorders, vitiligo, premature grey hair, alopecia areata, lupus? In fact, you may have been hypOthyroid then with a TSH over 3. You need to have FT3 and FT4 tested....also TPO and TSI antibodies. Any family history of autoimmune disorders in your family? Said while I had all the symptoms, since my TSH was 2.3, I couldn't possibly be hyper. Suggested I see a psychiatrist. Anyone have normal numbers and are still being treated by their doctor? On the days you take none, not only do you become more hyper, but it always seemed logical to ME, having the extra stimulation and no meds creates an environment for the antibodies to reproduce. Certainly a set up for failure. Now... ummmmm ... It is only T4 they tested here. So we really do not know what other things could have influenced this reading. Is there any way to figure out what her true FT4 numbers could even be close to ? Zhi, The total T4 that you had done is also influenced by estrogen, other medications and I am not sure what else, sine I never had one done, as I always insisted on FreeT4. No guessing that way. But and I are looking at the TREND...so our words still will be the same. Next question...are you already limiting the iodine in your diet ? If not...now is the time to study the situation and do it. Iodine is the fuel our thyroids use to make hormone. Sooooo...less iodine = less hormone = less Tap ! Your getting down there on your dose, and iodine could well be the final factor in remission for you. It is possible. After the first month I limited my iodine, my PTU dose had to be cut completely in half ! Now in remission, I STILL feel the affects of iodine, and still watch it. I believe the only reason I will ever go back to hyper, is if I mess up and stop watching my diet, and possibly get too stressed out. I have had a few things come up since remission as far as stress, and though I did flip out, I DID back off and destress...so this theory is only half tested. :-) It is my firm belief that the remission rates in this country are so low, because our doctors tell all of us, our diets do not matter. How logical is that ? Then, the ones that do accidentally slip into remission, with out this knowledge, and very likely to go hyper again. Thus the lower rates for staying there. I know this sounds too simple, and all the medical jargon makes all new patients feel they will never understand Graves'...but I tell you...this is NOT rocket science in my experience. True, I had to come to the Internet to start figuring it out, since my top doc endo didn't help...but once I got the basics, it was down hill from there. The only way 99% of Graves' patients will hit remission and stay there is if they take matters into their own hands as much as possible. True, I had to come to the Internet to start figuring it out, since my top doc endo didn't help...but once I got the basics, it was down hill from there. The only way 99% of Graves' patients will hit remission and stay there is if they take matters into their own hands as much as possible. Who knows? BUT...the point is remission, not years and years of fighting with doctors about labs, and NO Thank You ..I do NOT want RAI...and listening to them telling you death is eminent if you stay on the drugs. Go to the home page for this group, and you will find many useful links. OR...ask Google " Iodine content foods " . You will be absolutely amazed where the iodine is ! It is in everything ! First thing will be to look at your multi vitamin. It most likely has 150 mcg of iodine. That is all a person needs each day. So if you eat anything ....you are over. There are mulits out there with no iodine. Good first step. Then eliminate completely all pre made foods of all kinds. RE Atkin's shakes, they are probally ok, but they are expensive. I would order some samples of better ones at www.vitalady.com or www.wlssuccess.com Both offer virtually the same products and are secure sites. (but vitalady is our friend and you might want to be loyal to her!) ;O) You are going to want to have some calcium citrate at home (don't buy tums even if the surgeon says they are ok, they are not!) You might want to consider buying some Gas X for home, cause passing that gas is very hard at first. Buy sugar free jello (plenty), crystal lite, broth, sf pudding, applesauce, sf hot chocolate, etc for the liquid stage. Buy a good children's chewable vitamin (with iron). Make sure that it doesn't have any sugar in it. You may want to consider buying some Milk of Magnesia to get things going for after you come home from the hospital. Also ask your doctor about Colace (a stool softener), comes in handy. I would also suggest buying a big water bottle, as in like a 24 ounce one, makes it easy to guage how much water you are getting in (ie, at first I would just simply make sure that I drank at least 3 bottles a day, ensuring that I got enough water in...it is kinda hard to drink water at first, you have to sip continually during the day). I would have died without them !!!And chewable Phayzyme(anti gas).. I wouldn't worry about the vitamins too much the first few 5-7 days, because your new tummy will have a bit of a hard time at first..But them definitely, get a good chewable one..I did well with Centrum chewable, for the first 8 weeks, then went to prenatals, twice a day, and still lost 50% of my hair, with 130 gm of protein daily.. But wala !!! 6 months out, a(almost) and it's all coming back... I didn't care if I ended up bald !!(guess I'd Tattoo roses on my head or something)..Good luck And Congratulations !!!! , in Haines city, FL.
