Guest guest
The last part of that paragraph on page 56 states the purpose " has the effect of slowing the speed with which your stomach digests what you've eaten. " - With this purpose in mind, wouldn't eating a piece of whole-wheat bread do the same thing? Sheila (Virginia) Re: Phase 1 grocery list Blue book page 55 bottom " here's a tip that will lower the glycemic index on any meal: Fifteen Minutes before you begin eating, have a spoonful of metamucil in a class of water. Guest guest
Would " Benefiber " do the same as Metamucil since it is a bulking agent? It is suppose to be less of a gas-creator. Sheila (Virginia)

That's why the book doesn't indicate anywhere to take it with every meal. It's offered as a tip to help digest some foods. So, yes, if you are eating good carbs like whole wheat and plenty of fiber-rich veggies, there's no reason to take Metamucil on a regular basis. Benefiber is indeed another fiber supplement. The goal isn't " bulking " -- it's to take in additional fiber. The body needs fiber -- it serves several purposes in the digestive system. > The last part of that paragraph on page 56 states the purpose > " has the effect of slowing the speed with which your stomach > digests what you've eaten. It's a fine source of fiber, but I wouldn't rely on it to slow down digestion (although it does to a degree). For that matter, I wouldn't rely on a fiber supplement to " slow " digestion either. If you eat a slice of bread then drink a glass of soda pop, your body is going to get at the raw sugar in the pop pretty quickly regardless of the bread's presence. The goal is simple --> eat healthy, natural foods and avoid simple carbs. By their very nature, complex carbohydrates, if ingested through whole foods, tend to carry a measure of fiber.
