lol...thanks . I work in the IT department, though. But the situation is

very similar. There are days when the phone just isn't ringing, and I don't

have much to do.

And fortunately I make a bit more than $10.00/hr. :)

FWIW, Jen, this varies widely between companies. For example,

works in a call center. In call centers, if there are no calls then the

employees are typically twiddling their thumbs. Many will take a book with

them to read during down time. Believe it or not, there are quite a few

jobs with similar conditions. While this is an obvious up side of working

there, the down side is that most of these jobs do not pay as well

(generally <$10/hr). On the other hand, there ARE companies where such

activities represent an abuse. At one company I worked with a while back

('99?), I set up on an employee who was playing games all day rather than

doing his programming work. When the owners had enough data, they

confronted the employee and a parting of ways was arranged. Like I said --

it all depends on the company.
