Guest guest
Why does it have to be " an issue " ? Why not I did it " just because I felt like it/I wanted to " ?? It is not something that she does on a regular basis. People have bad days and good days. I am pretty sure we all do something that is not that great for us. Someone also said...if we did not have these overeating issues, we would not be on a weight loss board in the first place. I think we are too quick to label at times in the group and for that matter in this country. We see a commercial with a person day dreaming at a meeting and they are labeled with possible adult ADD. What person has never daydreamed in a meeting?? Why are we so quick to jump to diagnose, jump to a conclusion and smack a label on it? This is a place where people come to share with hopes of getting ideas, suggestions, motivation. I hope they continue to do so. Just my two sense and now I am broke...LOL MB riginal Message ----- From: Chuck Kelsey To: South-Beach-Diet-Getting-It-Right Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 11:32 AM Subject: Consuming huge quantities I am troubled by this recent thread. Overeating a Thanksgiving dinner isn't the same thing as eating the entire 20-lb. turkey or an entire pie or an entire gallon of ice cream. In my unprofessional opinion, anyone that sits down and consumes an entire gallon of ice cream in one sitting has some issues that should be looked at by a professional counselor. It's real easy to just blow it off and say " well I've done that before, too. " That doesn't make it " right, " it means that you may have a problem too. South Beach does NOT cure eating disorders. If you suspect you have an eating disorder, my suggestion is to seek help for that problem, not expect South Beach to solve it. I'm not trying to upset anyone, or to point any fingers, but denying that it is a problem isn't going to solve anything. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones - and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats. Guest guest
It's an " issue " because it is not " normal. " I'm not jumping anywhere. If someone on this list said that they had chest pains after they exercise, wouldn't it be prudent to suggest that they seek professional medical help? I certainly think so. Why is this any different? Unfortunately, South Beach Diet makes an assumption that people do not have other medical or mental conditions. Remember, it is designed as a healthy-heart diet, not a weight loss diet. Someone did say " if we didn't have an overeating problem we wouldn't be here. " I don't totally agree with that statement. Lots of us never ate huge portions -- like an entire gallon of ice cream for example. I'll use myself and my wife as an example. We never binged on anything - ever. We just ate too much of the wrong foods. Too much fat, too much refined stuff, too much sugar. We didn't go into Mcs and order 5 or 6 burgers, extra large fries and extra large drink. No, we ordered one burger, medium fries and a medium drink. Problem was, we did that too many times a month. We didn't sit down and each eat a large pizza apiece -- we ordered a medium and split it -- but it added up to trouble over the long haul because we did it too often. Certainly, I agree, come here for support. My comment was intended as support. It simply stated that JUST MAYBE some people really need to consider that they may have an eating disorder. I know that it's difficult for people to admit that there might be more at play and that they want to deny that it could be. I know that the first step of denial is trying to justify one's actions by comparing them to some like them. I'm not judging anyone out there on this list. I'm merely suggesting that there can be more at play here and that people should consider that. You don't have to believe me, ask your doctor. Ask him or her " Doc, if I have an eating disorder that goes untreated, can a diet cure this problem? " Sorry if this doesn't sit well with some. Again, I'm not singling anyone in particular. This is just my own personal opinion. I am not a health care professional. BUT... I would like to see everyone succeed on this venture, otherwise I'd just keep my mouth shut. Tough love ;-) Chuck -Beth wrote: > Why does it have to be " an issue " ? Why not I did it " just because I felt like it/I wanted to " ?? It is not something that she does on a regular basis. Guest guest
I happen to agree with you, -Beth only because I can relate. I love food and therefore I eat waaaaay to much sometimes.....hence SBD. I think it's just my weakness, it always has been. I think everyone has one. It may not be overeating specifically, it may be eating high fat food to often, alcohol, cigarettes, tv. etc. I've always eaten a fairly healthy diet, my blood work and BP proves that, but when I find that one food that I love, I do over indulge, that's why I SB.
