I was a MAJOR chocoholic, but I haven't had any trouble not eating chocolate, I am not even trying. I do find myself wanting the " meal " types of foods. My weight loss isn't inspirational, (25lbs) but for those of you who use to be in OA, I feel " relieved on the bondage of food! " . Basically, I just feel like a regular person, if something looks good to me, I taste it. But I am not bingeing or overeating ANYTHING, and most of my choices are very healthy. Since the surgery, I think I have had ONE incident where I felt like I was acting very compulsive. Saw a piece of pizza, HAD to have it, shaking, the whole thing. Got very sick! Slowed down and have now realized if I want to try to eat pizza, I can and have, but I don't make it my regular diet. This was my major concern, but honestly, I DO want the weight loss, but the part I have ENJOYED the most is not being totally obsessed with the food. I read about people who are counting their calories. That's fine if it works for them, but I am through dieting and worrying about every morsel that passes my lips. I am just happy to FINALLY have a sane relationship with FOOD!!! I think a lot of what you are reading about is that HABITS die hard. Guest guest
, My cravings for sugar are big zero!!! Before surgery I use to sneak out and get a can of Betty Crocker Chocolate frosting and eat the whole thing in one day!!! I was a hopless addict to sweets, cake, pie, cookies you name it. Now I never touch the stuff and have no desire at all. I now crave corn on the cob, sweet corn. I just love veggies!!! It's truly a miracle. I was told that Dr R said that there are receptors in the top and bottom of the stomach that cause cravings and that he makes the new stomach out of the middle portion of the stomach and that is why most folks forget all about sweets!!!! It is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me!!! My skin is so much better too. MGB 1 10 2000 and weighed 242 lbs. Guest guest
I to was a hugh sweet eater before surgery. I would stop by Dunkin Donuts in the morning and buy 6 eclairs and eat them throughout the day. I was never a big meat eater just cakes, cookies and candy didn't care for chips that much. I have found that since surgery I can say no much easier. I am not going to say that when I see the sweets I don't want them but a few bites will satisify me rather than the whole thing. Yesterday the girls at work bought me this cake for my birthday now before surgery I would have tried to eat it all but one piece was fine this time and it took me forever to eat it. It did taste to sweet. I think for me it is my eyes seeing all that sweet stuff that I use to eat everyday wanting it and not my body. My eyes are bigger than my stomach. Even now when we go out to eat I order to much thinking I am going to eat it all and after 2 bites I am done and there is never any room for dessert. I have been on this list for quite a while now and I have watched alot of you join this list and then move on to surgery and now starting to lose weight. I think everyone on this list is doing wonderful be it 1 pound or 40. Congrats to all of you new post ops. Liz

Guest guest
Hi Velvet, Yes, many hypo people crave salt or meat or real food. And hyper people are more likely to crave carbs, with most people having personal favorites. Usually when I'm hyper (or sleepy and need to stay awake) I eat whatever is a quick fix, as in chocolate candy bar. All the symptoms you mention sound like they belong on a hypothryoid list. Take care, Elaine
Guest guest
'er not at all - except to finding a cure for Graves...for me My other groups are all Mensa - so, a tendency to - question - is 'native' - however , said it and left it...unless I find that piece of pig to...g> but - no In the meantime I received my Light Box this morning - as for use with S.A.D...which I don't think I have but ... I am going to use it and see if it does anything to help rearrange the body clock back to day time living instead of being awake through the night - will let you know what if any effects there are...it is rather a nice piece of equipment...IF a bit strong so far also - having been hyper for some months and on Carbimozole only - I find more symptoms have appeared to suggest I am now hypo - rapid weight gain hoarser throat slower heart rate - or at least undiscernable.. low temperature - 96c facial, hand and feet oedema ...and other things & so forth...so am going to fiddle about with those too and see what happens..recently I found I was craving celery - I mean CELERY! which may have something to do with a highish salt content? Well that one was interesting as I usually crave icecream /or chocolate ..or even both together Anyone here noticed any unusual food cravings which may be tagged to their illness? Velvet. Guest guest
thanks both fascinating - all of this isn't it? I am supposed to have Graves - lost 50% thickness of hair last year, rapid heart beat, lost weight ( yippee) ..and was to have RAI on 7th Feb this year...decided to search on the net about 2 weeks before and dropped the RAI appointment when I read these posts... I noticed a weight gain a little before that and having got to speak to my consultant ...he sounded 'surprised' when I said about hypo symptoms - which doubly suggested to me NOT to have that treatment.. good thing - these groups Velvet Cravings Hi Velvet, All the symptoms you describe sound hypo. (In the archives of this group there's also a symptom list.) I've also heard people describe craving sweet tastes while hyper and salty while hypo. Can you get blood tests to decide about reducing your Carbimozole? (In my case, my endo has said if I get hypo on my current dose she'll add some thyroid hormone instead of reducing my ATD.) Best wishes,

Guest guest
>>>Anyone here noticed any unusual food cravings which may be tagged to their illness? Hi Velvet, I seem to crave both salty and sweet. Had a big time canned peaches in syrup craving. But I also can go thru potato chips like crazy --esp. Pringles:-) I notice that one day I need something salty and the next something sweet. Can stick to one or the other. You mentioned edema...I've had edema for 2 years, its not so much right now tho (maybe because I turned hyper?) Also lost some hair about a year ago, am very tired all the time, hate the cold as well as the heat, but its harder to climb stairs, my hands have a slight tremor and I can't paint right now and so on. When I read symptom charts its confusing cause I " ve got things on both. Hope you find out if you are hypo or not. All the best! I've been craving it the entire pregnancy and it is definitely the WRONG time of year for freshness in Ohio. It's all I want though... which is hard because I NEED to gain weight and the fruit just isn't going to do it. The other small craving has been wonton soup from a local restaurant (though not often, and again, not the " heartiest " meal) and also 's frosties! I don't even care for chocolate that much.. but they taste good to me. And I've CONSTANTLY craving crushed ice. Due to my anemia, I'm sure. Guest guest
I crave onions and anything spicy. I'll eat onions on ANYTHING. I love spicy, red chili, curried Thai food. I love crushed red pepper in stew, soup, and on pizza. I know I won't be able to continue with this trend once the baby comes and I am breastfeeding, so I am getting it all in now. And you know the BEST part? Since my surgery, I have never had heartburn or indigestion even once. I was the envy of my childbirth class the other day. All the ladies were lamenting about the horrible heartburn- I mentioned I'd never had it once, and this " hush " went over the room... it was quite comical. Guest guest
I am also craving fruit!! I can not get enough grapes!! I read somewhere that it is an old wifes tale that if you crave fruit that you are having a girl. Do any of you who are craving fruit having a girl? Just wondering. I am also craving (dont laugh) pickles. I thing it is just the sour taste I want. Now that you mention it, a Big Mac does sound really good right now!! Dee, you mentioned you are in Ohio. Where? I am from Ohio too. I live in Oklahoma now cuz my husband is in the Army. I am from a little town called Circleville. It is about an hour south of Columbus. Gotta run, work is calling me!
