Does anyone have experience with it.What is it usually used for.I Shoshana - Both my kids were on Zantac as infants and toddlers. Both went on it around 4 weeks old, DD stayed on it until she was about 2yrs old, I just weaned Caton off it when he turned a year. Zantac lowers the acidity levels of the stomach secretions, so that when a person refluxes, the refluxed fluid does not irritate the espohogus as much. It was very effective for both my kids, and is considered to be a very safe drug. With both kids, it took at least 3 days for the effects to kick in, but I've heard that it can take as long as 2 weeks for the full effects to take place. That is because it is a systemic drug, and the blood levels need to reach a saturation point for it to be effective. Because of that, it provides 24 hour relief. So your DD wouldn't notice any difference at all for a few days at least. HTH -
Guest guest
Zantac is for pain with ulcer and reflux diesase, it stops the production of stomach acid. took it for a while, but it wasn't strong enough, he needed prilosec. I'm soory I don't have any ideas for an antibiotic, but OI will pray for your son, and the rest of your family. Guest guest
Dawn, Could it be Raphampin (sp)? IV is almost blood color. [eosinophilic gastroenteritis] zantac Hi, Miriam this past week was in alot of pain especially when I fed her the vivanex after about 20-30 cc she would be crying in pain.I spoke to the doctor and at first they put her on Maalox which didn't do anything. Now they have her on zantac. Does anyone have experience with it.What is it usually used for.In addition to her stomach hurting she has been complaining that her chest hurts but she is not throwing up or having diarrhea Now that she has been on it she has been a little better she is not complaining all day that her stomach hurts but she still can't have a full feed without complain that her stomach hurts usually about a half she is ok with which is better than what she was doing. Her pediatrician thought that maybe she might have an ulcer from the NG tube Is that possible could that be causing her pain. I hope they will be doing her g-tube soon. They are waiting for ICU to have a ;bed available to do the procedure. On a different note My son was in the hospital this past week with an allergic reaction to his antibiotic for pneumonia and now he has no other antibiotic that I know of that exists. Is there anyone else out there that there kid is allergic to all antibiotics . If so what do you do when the kid is sick. I am dreading if the pneumonia comes back since he didn't finish his course of antibiotics and he is starting to cough alot again. Hope to hear from someone, Shana( Mom to Miriam 4 EG NG tube, Yisroel 2 , possible EG, allergic to all antibiotics, Tehilla 8 ADHD)
Guest guest
Shoshana, Is he allergic to every single antibiotic? Have they tried Vacomyicen or Gentimycen? Spencer is allergic to most antibiotics but there are a few that he doesn't have problems with. Raphampin is one of them. Vaco we have to pretreat with Benadryl and he is getting worse even with that. Have they mentioned desensitizing him from one of the major antibiotics. We may be faced with that one of these days. It's pretty scary to go through. They put them in the PICU and give them mega doses of Benadryl and other allergy med's and them most often have to put them on a vent until they are desensitized from the particular antibiotic. Hope that helps. Guest guest
That stuff is really scary. It turns the urine reddish color and the whites of the eyes and skin yellow. I was glad when Spencer got off of it. It sure as heck did the job though. Guest guest
Yes, pretty nasty stuff. We only use it when we really have to and have resorted to surgeries because of the antibiotic issue (ear tubes, tonsils and adenoids removed). Guest guest
Hi Shoshana, was on Zantac. It didn't work for her, so now she is on Prilosec, given with 5cc Maalox. I think, though, that it is the Vivonex that is causing all of 's problems. She fights and cries through almost every feed (she has a g-tube) and rarely sleeps at night. I am currently fighting with her GI to get her changed to Elecare. is anaphylactic to milk and I think the milk contamination in the Vivonex is making her sick. It could be the same with Miriam. Her story sounds a lot like 's. BTW, is 4 1/2 (9/27/95). Guest guest
Steph, Raphampin, Rifampin!!! They both sound the same. I am totally hooked on phonics! LOL! Re: [eosinophilic gastroenteritis] zantac Dawn, Bet that would be Rifampin... it is very potent. Steph.

Guest guest
Shana, We had similar problems to what you describe with Vivonex. It turned out I was ALLERGIC to it, becuase it has mild protein contaminant in it. The makers of the formula (Novartis) stated that it was NOT intended for allergic disease. Can you switch to Elecare? I'd bet it would help solve the problems. Steph.

Guest guest
Dayna, You need to ask your ped to order a ph probe. That will be much more indicative of reflux. It is just a probe/tube that is put down through the nose into the esophagus. Then the other end is attached to a little recorder that keeps track of the acidity in there. After 24 hours, it is pulled out and the recorder is hooked up to a computer that will graph the reflux, if there is any. I was able to watch the numbers on the recorder go up and down. Anything below 4 is considered reflux and Max had LOTS of that. The gastric emptying tests showed no reflux and the endoscopies did not either. This one simple test showed how bad it was and now the rest is history. You really need to have this checked out if there is any question in your mind. A damaged esophagus from reflux can lead to many problems later on. You just don't want to know. But it can be treated and then you don't have to worry! Jodi PS There is more and more talk about using proton pump inhibitors in addition to meds like Zantac to treat reflux. This is all new to me, but we are doing it for Max.
