Guest guest
Dear All, May have missed most of this on " Eating Habits " while away - but in 1996, the year of the infamous admissions by the UK government on the transmissibility of BSE to humans, someone in Australian government circles made the decision to ban the import of British toffee which contains bovine gelatin - there was no public announcement, we learned about it only in December 96 when there were no UK toffees available for Christmas presents - BUT, like elsewhere, we still get UK cattle for breeding purposes - EXCEPT these are no longer known as UK cattle, since they come into Australia via Argentina, and are called .... YES, you guessed it .. Argentinean Cattle!!!!! Then, of course, these UK/Argentinean cattle are bred into Australian cattle lines and exported all over the world. This is one of the windows I refer to in the series of papers " Globalization of Mad Cow disease " , which of course when it transmits to our food chain becomes the " Globalization of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease " . Regards to all, Lynette. I have an as yet unwritten paper to present here in Perth in an hours time, one that like most others these days will have to come off the top of my head, but I couldn't resist passing these few comments in the context of " Eating Habits " !!
