Guest guest
Hi, just wanted to say that I really like all of the mail this list gets and the help I receive from it. With working 12 hrs a day this is how I keep the volume down. In the mornings I go through as much of the e-mail as I can before going to work, and the ones I want to reply to or anything I just want to keep, print and delete the rest that I have read. Then when I get home go throught the new mail and answer all the ones I have printed. Then at bedtime ,again go through the new mail. This seems to keep the volume down, or at least it does for me. Guest guest
I belong to, at last count, 7 other mailing lists. Some have as few as 50 members, others have more than twice as many as this list. Two are lists I myself run. Two are " professional " lists. These two lists have a limit of how many times a day a person can post. Each member may post to the list only 3 times per day. It is frowned on to post only one line, and personal messages are strictly off-list. They are very strict about staying on topic. If someone posts off topic to the list, they must also post an " objunky " to make up for it - a bit of useful and field related information. New members are encouraged to introduce themselves, but members are encouraged to greet them off list. Offenders are put on moderated status, and then if they continue to " offend " they are banned from the list. I know this sounds harsh, but when lists get big, say, over 100 people, there needs to be some organizational structure. The lists I am describing are successful, and truly support the people they were designed for. I am not finding deleting 99% of the posts all that supportive, personally, nor do I particularly care for the digest format. Now this may sound odd to you, but some of us have something to do besides sit there and scroll through dozens of WAY TO GO's and so on. Even on the Usenet list, where it's not moderated at all, that sort of thing is frowned on... I have been spending a lot more time working and with my son, and truthfully, I may quit this list myself. It's very supportive, but the volume, especially the " one-liners " is nuts! I suggest, strongly, that the moderators put their heads together and come up with some posting guidelines. a.k.a. ~ Natty's mommy lanat@... http://www.javanet.com/~lanat/
