Re: Stress and CJD.

My mother died from CJD on Dec. 10, 1998. Prior to the noticable symptoms

she displayed at the end of October she, in most part, appeared fine. She did,

over several months, mention leg pain, double vision, neck and shoulder pain,

constipation, a sour taste in her mouth and insomnia. She had leg pain for

several years, but thought it was arthritis. She was NEVER one to complain so

she kept this to herself and only mentioned it in passing. She always kept

active and hide her symptoms well.

I have always believed stress caused my mom's CJD to happen. On Oct. 13th,

she came to my house. I had a near fatal asthma attack. She had to call 911.

In the ER I was paralyzed, intubated and put on a ventilator. I was in this

condition for 3 days before waking up. I spent 5 more days in Critical Care. I

returned home from the hospital on Oct. 21. She stayed with me to help me

recuperate. By the end of the month she was hiding belongings making notes to

where her things were, she was extremely confused, couldn't drive, turn on the

television or shuffle and play cards.....From that point on it was downhill

until her death.

I had a TERRIBLE time dealing with the fact that maybe the stress of my

illness caused my mother's CJD to become full blown. Doctor's at Massachusetts

General Hospital, Boston assured me my illness was NOT the cause of my mother's

CJD, but I NEVER believed them entirely.

Reading about stress and CJD it has brought back all those horrible,

guilt-ridden feelings again. This is not a good day for me....
