Fast test for Alzheimer's developed

NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (UPI) - Researchers at New York's Albert Einstein

College of Medicine say they have developed a quick and accurate screening

test to identify people with early Alzheimer's disease and other memory

disorders of late life. The test, named the Memory Impairment Screen

(MIS), also will be used to reassure the millions of people with memory

complaints who are worried about Alzheimer's but shouldn't be. This fear

can start for people who are in their 20s, but most often comes in

mid-middle age, when brains become so packed with data that forgetfulness

is common. The researchers, led by Dr. B. Lipton, a professor of

neurology, report their findings in the current issue of the journal

Neurology. The results were based on a study involving almost 500 older

people.

New culprit suspected for MS

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 1 (UPI) - The body's own antibodies play a direct role

in the development of multiple sclerosis and are not just minor players,

according to medical researchers. Writing in the February issue of Nature

Medicine out today, researchers said the discovery suggests a " possible

new target for drug therapy for the intermittent, generally progressive

neurologic disorder that remains elusive to wholly successful treatment. "
