Guest guest
Debbie, I wrote up something that I would probably insert into one of my letters. It is mostly from your messages that you sent through a few weeks ago. When I asked if you had something about Dura Mater I thought that it might be at your fingertips through the cut and paste method. There are several layers of tissue that exist between your brain and the outside world. First there is your skin or scalp. Then there is bone or skull. After the skull there are three special coverings, also called the meninges. The outer layer of the meninges is called the dura mater. This is tough and thick. The dura mater is used for reconstructive surgeries. It is obtained through cadavers, of which some of those could have died from CJD. Some of the surgeries that this is used for are:neurological, obstetrics and gynecology, hernia repairs, as well as orthopedic, ear and larynx, urologic operations, plastic surgery, ears, spinal and dental procedures. There have been many people who have developed CJD due to receiving dura mater grafts, including individuals in their teens, twenties and thirties. There are also probably many more that are not known because they didn't realize that dura mater was used in their operations. Robin
