When I was in a UC flare, I was started on 40mg and that was

when I was a teenager and a very skinny 140 or so pounds. I do remember

that the 40mg was terrible for the side effects such as crankiness, moon face,

and a bottomless pit appetite. One thing that did help me through that

time was a very intense workout routine. It felt good to have decent

energy and helped to reduce the effects of moonface and adding weight from

eating so much.

Actually, steroids are not weight dependent. The method of giving steroids is VERY variable. For example, as a Nurse Practitioner, when giving steroids to someone with asthma or emphysema, the dosage, the tapering process, etc are very patient specific - severity of symptoms AND the individual and their history with both the disease and Prednisone. For my 18 year old son, he is SO Compliant with medications, in hopes of never having to take Prednisone again!

It depends on the patient’s weight. What’s that?

Then yes, I think that’s quite a lot. The doctor will probably

taper her off after a bit. I weigh 160. For a little while I was on 60 mg, and

that really affected me. But by the time he had me tapered down to 20 I hardly

noticed anything. And when he got me down to 10 the moon face went away and I was

feeling fine.

According to http://www.medscape.com/druginfo/dosage?drugid=6007 & drugname=Prednisone+Oral & monotype=default,

there is a pediatric dose/wt:

Max/min

should be 0.039mg/kg and 2.0mg/kg

40 lbs is 18 kg, so 36 mg would be the high end. 30 mg

would be acceptable, on the high end, for a pediatric patient.

At 180 lbs, the most I’ve ever taken (for asthma) was 60

mg, for a couple of days on a dosepak.

I know tha prednisone can be a very scary thing. I only weighed about

115lbs when I was diagnosed with UC and I was put on 60mg. I tapered

down everytime but when I would get to about 20 or 15mg I would flare

again. As one could imagine I was on prednisone for a very long time,

almost two years consistantly! I was awful!!! I know the side effects

can be a lot to handle but it really can be a wonderful drug. I may

have missed it in your posting but if you daughter is taking it for UC,

I would talk to your doc about Entocort EC. It comes in 3mg doses and

it much easier on you. There are little side effects and it has worked

miracles for more! Most wonderful of all I had no weight gain and no

moon face! I had the biggest moon face in the world and my legs felt

super heavy! Good luck!
