What are these ribbons that we see each day on the streets and on many web

pages? The following is a SMALL compilation of some of the more popular (and

meaningful) ribbons that I have come across.

Most of the ribbons have corresponding links where you can learn

more about each issue, cause. Feel free to email me if you find that I am

missing a ribbon. If you do have an addition, please include an URL where I can

learn more about the issue.. :-)

Purple Ribbon Campaign

The Purple Ribbon Campaign is aimed at educating and bringing

awareness toward reducing violence in our society, our communities, our schools,

and most importantly, our homes.

a.. Artists Against Racism - From Cherniak - We try to get this

ribbon known since it's a silent symbol of anti-racism for youth to recognize,

and for artists to wear to be role models to youth.

Green Ribbon Campaign

The Green Ribbon Campaign is associated with several awareness

campaigns.

b.. The Green Ribbon of Hope is Child Find Canada's " symbol to

remember missing children and to seek their safe return. It is also used as an

expression of our thoughts for missing children, their families and friends. "

c.. Prisoners of Ecological Conscience A plea for a display of

compassion and solidarity towards those that are imprisoned, " whether it be by

goverments, corporations, or any destructive processes that compromise the

diversity and integrity of our Planet Earth. "

d.. From Matt : The green ribbon is also related to the Cancer

awareness campaign, not just breast cancer like the pink ribbon, but all cancer,

and they want people to be aware of the possible causes and treatments of all

kinds of cancer.

Yellow Ribbon Campaign

The Yellow Ribbon Campaign is best known for signifying the release

of hostages the world over.

citizens who were sentenced to over eight years in prison. With the power of the

media and the internet, the two men were later released and sent home.

g.. Zimmermann Legal Defense Fund ZLDF -Virtual Yellow Ribbon Appeal

h.. From Dar Emme:I wanted to let you know that we have a Yellow

Ribbon program, started in Colorado and now nationwide, for the prevention of

teen suicide. We lost our son, Mike, in September 1994. I can send you more

information if you would like, please let me know. Like I say, it is nationwide,

Canada and a couple foreign countries. If you can get a copy of the lastest

edition of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul - 3rd helping', released in April 96, the

story of our program is on page 155 - 'For the Love of A Child'. Kids throughout

the country are responding, and lives are being saved! President Clinton has

recognized this program and in fact his staff ordered ribbons (and ribbon

cards).

Blue Ribbon Campaign

The Blue Ribbon Campaign is probably the most recognizable ribbon on

the internet. Organzed to fight Bill Clinton's new bill on " indecent " material

on the internet (and what the US government deems indecent to be).

Red Ribbon Campaign

The Red Ribbon Campaign is synonymous with AIDS awareness and

activism. As with most ribbons, there are also other organizations that display

the red ribbon in support of their cause.

increase awareness about drug abuse and prevention.

University of Montreal. The purpose of the campaign: to have men show their

support for ending violence against women.
