THE HEAT IS ON

The high temperatures routinely used to sterilise surgical instruments

in British hospitals might actually be helping to spread the deadly

disease CJD. Researchers in Scotland believe that increasing the

temperature makes prions, the rogue proteins thought to cause the disease,
