Guest guest
New Mexico cancer specialist Dr. Jane Henney, (pronounced HAY-nee) was confirmed today as the first woman commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. It will be up to her to implement the legislation to speed the review of new medicine, which Congress adopted last year. During the confirmation process Henney stated, " If confirmed, I would be committed to using all of the authorities available, including the accelerated approval process, to expedite review and approval of therapies for individuals with serious or life-threatening illnesses. " Dr. Henney also responded that she " did not believe that the use of accelerated approvals reflects an interpretation that less convincing data of effectiveness are acceptable. I believe it reflects flexibility as to appropriate and acceptable endpoints to establish effectiveness. " Dr. Henney will lead the agency of 9,000 employees.
