Pat,

I know we take what this man says with a grain of salt, but when Schonberger

called me earlier this year, he said that blood and organ donation by blood

relatives of CJD victims is unadvisable. He said that if people are so deeply

motivated to donate blood or organs, they should have the gene sequencing to

prove they are not susceptible--but he said it would be better not to donate

anything at all--just in case that theoretical risk is real.

For someone who has been indifferent and even arrogant, it is one of the few

things it seems he has stood for--and it comes from the man who told me that

CJD is not prevalent enough to worry about, but also said they didn't want to

stir up the public and create a panic (about the safety of blood, organ

transplants, food sources, etc.).

In reference to Beverly G's message--Did both the Canadian and US Red Cross

lift the CJD relatives' blood donation ban? I remember reading about one or

the other, but both?
