Thank you. This is the first time I have ever had a propane tank in my yard. I hate cooking on gas. The only time I have before moving here was in our motor home. 50 years ago I lived in Spokane. Two blocks from a natural gas explosion that leveled a Safeway store and another store next to it. It didn't do any damage to the house that I was in but it broke windows 5 miles away across town. That was enough natural gas for me. No one was in the stores at the time so there were no injuries to people.

I am curious about the liquid oxygen. I know that you and some others use it. I am told that that is very dangerous but if a fillling lasts 10 hours that would take care of overnight. I probably couldn't get it anyhow but it was a thought for the boat. BJ

Many of us don't know the difference, especially as it impacts us. So I looked up an answer. In some ways reminds me of the differences between gaseous oxygen cylinders and liquid oxygen.

The difference between propane, or liquid petroleum gas (LPG), and natural gas comes down to their portability, compression, energy efficiency, and cost. However, there is generally no difference when it comes to performance in appliances for heating, cooking, or drying. The mixture of natural gas is comprised of propane, along with other gases like methane, butane, ethane, and pentane.

One difference in the physical properties of propane and natural gas is how easily they liquefy and transport. Propane turns into a liquid at —46° F (-43° C), so it's easy to compress and carry in a portable tank. You can buy compressed propane at most gas stations. It's decompressed by a valve at the source of use, such as a barbeque grill. Yet natural gas doesn't compress as easily. It usually comes to your home from a utility company along dedicated lines to power things like a central heating system, clothes dryer, and water heater.

Propane is heavier than air which is heavier than natural gas. Both natural gas and propane will dissipate into the air if they are released in an open enough environment and both can pose an explosive risk if they concentrate enough and are ignited. However, because propane is heavier, it tends to fall to the ground, collect, and pose a greater explosive risk. On the other hand, because natural gas is lighter than air, it tends to rise and dissipate into the air, posing less of an explosive risk.

Propane provides more energy per unit volume than does natural gas. Heat is measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units. Propane provides about 2500 BTUs for the same volume of natural gas that only gives 1000 BTUs. However, natural gas can be less expensive at up to one-sixth the cost of propane, depending on where you live. Utilities in colder climates might supply natural gas for less money, especially during winter months. Some rural areas don't have access to a utility company that provides gas service

Liquid is actually less dangerous than compressed gas so thats a bit of

a misconception. However, neither is significantly more or less

dangerous.

The advantages of liquid center around its weight. Oxygen weighs less in

liquid form. Therefore, you can get more time out of the same weight

portable. Now, while talking about portables, the Helios Marathon which

was being talked about would not carry you overnight as you can't use a

demand mode during sleep. The reason is you wouldn't breathe as much and

send the signal back to the unit to send you oxygen. The disadvantage of

liquid portables is that you do have to have access to a reservoir to

refill a unit. So, its not like you can just add many many cylinders of

gas to the trunk of your car.

When it comes to stationary use in your home, liquid has a couple of

advantages over concentrators. First, it doesn't cost anything to

operate your reservoir. The electric cost of a concentrator can be from

$30 to $80 per month depending on your usage. The disadvantage is that

you have to get your liquid reservoir refilled so have to be home weekly

or however often for the refill. Some of those of us on liquid also

believe it to be a little easier on our sinuses although that may be

100% our imaginations. But it seems more a flow than a blow to us.

Oxygen companies prefer to provide you with concentrators and compressed

gas because its less expensive for them.

Thank you again for the info. I guess the liquid wouldn't help me much except for that electric bill. I have a conserver and I can get 28 hours or more from an E tank but I have to have that continuoud flow at night. I am only on 2 liters so I don't have that blow feeling. I was told to turn it up to 4 once and that was definitely a blow.

there is a formula for figuring out how to take the cost of electricity used for the concentrator off of your taxes -- it's in the Pulmonary Paper

Hi, I didn't know I could deduct the electrical cost of my concentrator

and I'm an accountant. Where is this pulmonary paper with the formula.

I would really appreciate it. Thanks

It would serve as a good reminder to all of you to look carefully at the medical deductions section of some IRS publications. You can deduct many things that you may not think of and that insurance doesn't cover. This includes your cost of traveling to your doctors (yes, the mileage does add up), modifications you make to your home, lifts, chairs, the electric expenses related to the concentrator.

Hi BJ....Just saying hi to you. Apparently no serious buyers yet. It will happen.

MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. NasturtiumsDon't fret about tomorrow, God is already there!

anybody still awake out there?

Okay, I have been doing nothing all day except had my esophogeogram. Why can't I have something that's easy to spell? Anyway the rest of the day was computer games and reading then a trip over to visit Beverley Joy and she certainly is a joy. I haven't eaten anything different than what I always eat, have done NOTHING different but I am covered with large itchy red bumps especially on my arms, chest, face and legs. No new meds so what the heck is happening to me? I am miserable and my feet and hands are swollen. My face itches like crazy. Anyone have a clue? I do not have seasonal allergies of any kind. I am hesitant to ignore it but do not want another ER visit. They look a lot like little blisters and it is getting worse by the hour. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
