Guest guest
Good morning, I started going to a naturopathic Dr. in search of " alternative " treatments for RLS/PLMD/insomnia. He gave me a compound called HYD56 (5-Hydroxytryptophan). He says this is a " step away " from L-Tryptophan, no longer available in the US. Since I'm still on Neurontin, I can't really tell if it's helping. I've been on for a little over a week. I *SEEM* to be sleeping better, but also feel more tired during the day. Anyone have any experience with this stuff? Thanks. Jeff P. 45 y/o Colorado Springs, CO (no, it's *NOT* snowing here)
Guest guest
I support your efforts (and agree with your response to Dr. Levine). Years ago Tryptophan was a help to me and I do believe that the drug companies (and perhaps the AMA) have supported the continued ban when there is no evidence that it is necessary. I hope that 5-Hydroxytryptophan is helpful to you and would like a follow-up message if it is. By the way, how did you find a naturopath and what what were the fees? I may be be doing this myself. Guest guest
Jeff, I used to take the old l-tryptophan years ago and found it helped, (I have even found a new sourse for it) and have also tried the 5htp. Now neither help me to sleep at all. I asked my neurologist and my family doc what they take and they both said meletonin. I asked our revered Dr. Levin about all three and he said to pitch them all which I did. I trust his judgement in these matters above anyone else I have cpme across. Besides not letting me sleep the large doseages I had to take to get even the sligest effect were causing weight (ugh) gain. So for me I am better off witout them. There are many schools of thought here on the reliability and safety of the new 5thp, I know a lot of people take it, but for me it just didn't work and the side effects were enough me make me stop. I am sure you will get a lot of varied answers, so I guess my best advice is to use our own judgement. LinddaLee
