Several months ago, I posted information from the Mayo Clinic and the

FDA concerning warnings about commercially available

5-hydroxytryptophan. It contains the same contaminant that was found in

tryptophan and led to its removal from the market by the FDA. This

substance supposedly causes an entity called " eosinophilia-myalgia

syndrome " which has been associated with fatalities. My advice is to

throw the stuff into the nearest landfill.

Bummer!

I did a little research on this. I suppose it's a matter of " he says

she says " ... the continuing battle between the naturopathic and

pharmaceutical-based communities. Supposedly, the contaminated

L-tryptophan leading to the OTC recall in 1989 was traced to a single

Japanese manufacturer. A little like asking God to recall air because

certain parcels of it in Philadelphia in the '70s were found to contain

Legionnaire's disease... I know this begs a discussion of government

agencies and quality control, which is a subject beyond my

comprehension. Add to this confusing mix the complex relationships

between insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and the medical and

legal communities, it's no wonder we all have restless legs! :-)
