I have never heard of any requirement to have the expiration date of a drug on the Rx label. In the state of land, the routine is to write on the label to dispose of the contents after one year. I checked several states Pharmacy Board Regulations and they do not mention the expiration date as a required entry on the label. If a medication is prepared by the pharmacy e.g. a sterile solution, then the expiration date is required. If you are concerned about the dishonesty of the pharmacy, I would suggest using another store. You could ask to see the container from which your Rx was dispensed. Wholesalers and manufacturers are required to have the expiration date on their products. But, if you think the pharmacist is dishonest, you could be shown another container with a valid date. If a pharmacy is found to be dispensing or even stocking out of date drugs, it stands the chance of losing its license. I really don't think many stores would take that risk. With all due respect, I think you are creating a problem where one doesn't exist. The turnover of inventory in pharmacies is so rapid that there is no need for them to try to make money dispensing expired drugs. I would be much more concerned about getting the right drug and strength. Dr. Levin
