Yo group,

I have been able to take up to 1600mg of Neurontin before I pay for it the

next morning. I thought that another group member besides from myself has

posted that although Neurontin is fairly mild compared to benzos and Parkinson

remedies, it can leave someone feeling like their sleep was not

" rejuvenating. " I have found that a combination of Xanax and Neurontin helps

me IF relief is to be had any given evening. I say, " any given evening "

because RLS/PLMS seems to adapt to meds sporadically. I am curious what the

exact stabilizing factor is when the meds do actually work. It seems strange

that meds work one time and the very next evening they don't.

Didn't mean to ramble but a couple of you mentioned that there were no

responses to Neurontin questions. Consider my " two cents "

given................

Hey Ed,

I had mentioned a few weeks ago that I was going through a period where my

sleep was not " rejuvenating " and asked if anyone else was having that

experience with Neurontin. Seems I go through cycles in that regard,

feeling more rejuvenated at some times than at others. I'm not sure if that

is Neurontin-related.

Hi Coleen,

Personally, I have found Neurontin to be incredibly benign compared to just

about any other medication I've ever taken. If anything, I have found

400mg. to be ineffective in my case, but I've never had Neurontin actually

cause sleep problems. I seem to be good enough at causing my own insomnia

without the help of meds. :-) Nighty, night hubby.

Ed: Have you ever tried keeping track of how much phosphorus-containing protein

(

as in meat, fisg or poultry) you eat for dinner? I find that if I eat more than

about 3 or 4 oz. of meat with dinner, it really aggravates my RLS in the

evening,

and maybe on into the night, even though I take a Sinemet about 7 pm and another

CR Sinemt about 10 pm.

Hi le - I know you are never going to believe this but I have some of

the same side effects to the Neurontin that you have, especially the dry

mouth and I was only taking 300 mgs. at bed time. I was prescribed the

Neurontin to decreae my pain and that it did. I have since cut it back to

100 mg. at bedtime and I actually take it around 9:30 because it also make me

very groggy in the morning, so if I take it earlier I don't have the problem,

the same with the dry mouth effect. One other thing I noticed when I was on

the 300 mg. was that I had to get up at 3x's a night to go the the bathroom.

Again, that stopped when I cut back to 100 mg. and BTW the 100 mg. still

seems to stop my pain. As long as it does and my side effects are nill if I

take it early one then I will continue it. I also take 1 mg. of Klonopin at

bedtime and have been taking that for about 2 years now. I don't know how

much, if any, it still helps but since it's not hurting me, that I know of,

I'll stay on that dose which is still a pretty small dose. I do take 2 Tyl

#3 as well, but lately my liver function tests have been slightly abnormal.

At this point they are not something the doctor is overly concerned about but

she is repeating the tests every three months. The last time it was normal,

go figure. I am thinking about asking my doc to change me to Ultram and I

need to do some research on that. I know a number of you are on it and if

anyone has any information on it or anyplace I might be able to look it up

please email me separately so that I can check it out. The weather here in

Boston has been great and I'm sure that it too has something to do with my

decreased pain and my newly diagnosed Fibro...aaaargh! Have a good day all

or a good night's sleep whichever. Kathy/Cambrdge 51 and counting the days

to 52.

Kathy (and all who are interested)

I have a " medications page " that I created as an " add-on " to the medications

listed at the

Southern Cal. Support Group Page. The reason that I did this was because on

their page, they

listed a brief summary of each medication, primarily concerning the dosages that

are commonly

prescribed for RLS patients. I found several really I found several very

detailed

pharmocological sites on the internet that include all of the information about

these

medications (side effects, interactions, etc.). So, if any of you want to know a

little more

about the medications that you are on, the URL for the page is

http://www.mLists.net/judson/Medications.html and Kathy, the URL for the

information on Ultram

is http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/tramadol.htm.

From my page, just click on the name of whatever medication you are interested

in and it will

take you to the site. If you're interested in finding information on any other

medication, you

can go down to the bottom of any medication page you're on and you'll find a

" search " button.

Click on it and type in the name (brand or generic) and it will give you the

information.

Hope this helps..

Restful Nights,

Jodi

Hi , glad to see you back! Neurontin is a medication that helps

some people with CMT with their pain. It is not opiate or addicting drug

and does not pass through the liver. Some Medline abstracts on Neurontin

are available on our main CMTUS page under " links " . There have been NO

CMT specific studies done on CMT persons and Neurontin use, although I

for one, have been helped immensly by it. We also now have a email list

for CMT persons using Neurontin. It is at

http://www.onelist.com/community/CMTNeurontin

You can read the basics about this medication at http://www.PlanetRx.com

Neurontin was originally founded by Japanese scientists to help

epilepsy. Secondary uses have shown it CAN also help people with types

of Neuropathy and depression.
