I have slight foot droop and usually fall forward when a toe catches.

Generally I catch myself but sometimes the message from the brain

doesn't get to the feet in time! One fall was particularly memorable

- I was grilling dinner for the family and was walking into the house

with a plate of chicken in one hand and a plate of hot dogs in the

other when my foot caught the top step sending me falling forward. I

thought about breaking my fall with my hands but didn't want to drop

the china plates or their contents and so fell hard on my knees

before sprawling face down on the kitchen floor with a tremendous

thud and clatter of plates. I was in so much pain I couldn't move

and just lay there as my family rushed over to see what was the

matter. Shortly I heard both children wailing and, thinking it was

out of concern for me, I reassured them that Daddy was OK (even

though I wasn't completely sure that was true.) It was then that I

realized that their wails weren't for me but were for their hot dogs

that had rolled off the plate onto the kitchen floor. Next time I

save myself and not the plates!

I always fall forwards and usually put my hands out to catch my fall. I also

wonder why I have not sprained my wrists. Just recently I tripped on the carpet

(wearing my AFO's) and went flying. Even with AFO's, one needs to pay good

attention to their walking............otherwise. You got it. Down you go.

With AFO's there is no give in your fall, so you absolutely go flying and

usually cannot catch yourself. AFO's can be very dangerous. I have tripped

many a time with no AFO's and have also stubbed my big toe many, many times.
