Guest guest
I know of some profoundly affected CMTers who have been taking opiates for their pain for several years with no adverse effects. They are at a stable dose so the pain is bearable and they can continue to function. As long as the med is used for pain and not to get high it shouldn't have bad effects. The patients are closely monitored by their doctors, who are gratified that they are able to provide some relief after years of just watching their CMT patients suffer. There is a Dr. Rose in California who advises other docs how to prescribe the morphine patch to be used in a safe way for extreme CMT pain. He wouldn't recommend it for most CMTers, just for the worst cases. Apparently it doesn't work for everyone, as far as cutting the pain, no med works for everyone, but used properly it is a blessing for some CMTers. I am not an authority, and I don't take meds myself. I only know what I read and hear from other CMTers, and CMT newsletters, web sites, and so forth. The CMTI newsletter had an article about Dr. Rose a while ago. Most of us don't need the heavy duty meds. Kat in Seattle
