TNS & Pain

I loooked back in my collection of CMTI newsletters & found an

article

by Dr. Sampson (who has CMT) on transcutaneous nerve

stimulation (TNS) that has worked extremely well for him. No one

knows

for sure why it works & it does not work for everyone. Maybe it helps

the body to secrete endorphins (natural morphine-like substances) or

maybe the impulses confuse the nerves & prohibit them from carrying

the pain messages back to the brain. The TNS machine (slightly bigger

than a package of cigarettes) has no function on strength. Side

effects are almost unheard of. Machines are expensive & in the US

must

be prescribed by a physician. (may be covered by major medical

insurance) Try before you buy by renting or borrowing from a

professional therapist. -from CMT Newsletter Aug/Sept 1988. Published

by CMT International, One Springbank Drive, St. Catharines, Ontario,

Canada, L2S 2K1. (905)687-3630. They have a collection of articles on

pain for a small fee. They also have a web site at www.cmtint.org

Alice,

I have used the TNS unit for a while.... I decided later that since I was

still having to take pain meds that I would not put myself thru the

discomfort of the TNS unit.

It is electric shock. You control the strength and the qty of the shocks.

Sometimes it would work and other times it did not.... Every one is

different as you know.
