Guest guest
OK, blast me for this not having to do with RLS, but I feel very strongly about the following. So, hit the DELETE key if you don't want to read on. Count me in the pitifully small 10% who believe in the Ten Commandments. Gosh, and my bed doesn't get made very often, either--mainly when the maid does it every other week! I also teach my children the Golden Rule. I even preach the Golden Rule in my classroom and I expect my students to follow it. I expect them to look for the good in people and to look for positive happenings instead of dwelling on the negative. Positive attitudes are catching, and it shows with my students. Sorry, Ninette, I'll have to disagree with you about the country not having morals or values. Contrary, though, to what folks think about the moral decay of our children in this country, there are some very good kids in our society. As a high school teacher, I see a few that make things bad for the majority of good kids. We still have a large number of high school kids going to church at my school of 2000 in an urban school in the suburbs north of Houston. Every Wednesday the prayer group gathers around the flag pole for their Bible club. And, then there are those that don't go to church, but still have high morals and are really very good kids. Not to worry folks, there are lots of good kids that will take us into the next century and run our country and businesses well. Sure some of them like music and fashion that we, as parents, don't particularly care for, but our parents didn't like a lot of the things we did either back in the sixties. Nor, probably did my grand parents sometimes like what my parents did when they were teen agers. Each generation makes its own mark. I think I turned out pretty good, if I don't say so myself. Sometimes my mother might not have thought so, with some of the things I did. Too bad my parents didn't live to see me have children, get a Master's degree and earn two national teacher awards for technology and one Texas teacher award for technology. And then there are the students that are the ones that make negative news and give the impression to the general public that ALL teenagers are bad. It just is not so. THERE ARE GOOD KIDS IN OUR SOCIETY WHO ARE CARING, MORAL, LAW ABIDING, GOD FEARING PEOPLE, WHO COME FROM GOOD FAMILIES THAT CARE ABOUT THEM. Most of the kids DO know right from wrong and live by that. Yes, there are SOME folks that have no morals, etc. But like my mother used to tell me about people having sex back when she was a teenager (she would have been 84). She said, back then, people still had sex, they just didn't talk about it! So, were people of the 30's and 40's any more moral than people are today? Guest guest
Should have phrased that differently. did not mean to say that no kids have morals or values. Our students at our high school pray around our flag pole every day, and this is started by my own church. I too have students who are fine, upstanding citizens of our community, and are excellent role models for others, but I find that everday more and more of them are becomung so desensetized to things like violence, bad language, and sex. I agree these things have been happening a long tme, but NOT to the extent they are now. My students are shocked when I tell them that certain " words " they use are inappropriate and that they won't use them around me. They talk openly about having sex. It's become an extracirricular activity, and even if it's just talk, they're always ready to " take someone out " . I think there are a lot of kids today who just don't know right from wrong, BTW, lest any of you misunderstand, this a discussion, not an argument, and sorry for those of you who may not be interested, but a subject like this is worthy enough to stray from the topic of RLS a bit. I think in light of the things going on right now, we would be hard pressed not to worry about what is going on in the minds of our teenagers. I applaud you and thank you Lindy for helping to teach these things in your classes.
Guest guest
Yes, Ninette, it is worrisome. And, I, too, have seen this decline come about gradually for many years. I also hear the same comments you mentioned, but only from selected students. I don't have all the answers. I'm not saying everyone is perfect, either, but we are survivors, and by changing what we can and leaving alone what we can't change, we will at least have our wits about us. Thanks for your input on this, too. I guess we are teachers because we do care and want the best for not only our own children, but our students as well. 'nuff said.
