This is a case of too much of a good thing, in my opinion. There truly are many cases where a " natural " substance is just as effective or perhaps even better than a prescribed one.....but I feel it is being carried too far in so many instances. The fact that there is no control over these OTC substances makes them very dangerous also. There is just no guarantee of what is in these bottles........or whether they might perhaps be contaminated. Connie

Guest guest
Hi All, At the risk of sounding overly cynical, I don't think all this wonderful testing by the pharmaceutical companies can be entirely trusted either - they are, of course, seeking to sell their products, and the FDA merely checks their paperwork. Can we all say PROFIT? ne, Teacher _________________________________________________________

Guest guest
This is in reply to Helena's message. I was absolutely delighted in your message. You have indeed done a lot of personal research. I am blessed with a medical practitioner who shares my feelings about dosing myself mercilessly with prescription medications. I am free to discuss any natural or over the counter remedy I may want to try with her and she hasn't turned down any of them. She has cautioned me about what to watch for. During my last visit with her I had to wait until the daily rounds and staff meeting were over (there was only a short wait) and when we sat down together the subject of medications came up. She was obviously unnerved about the discussion about medications in the meeting and mentioned that there were times when she wondered about the effectiveness of some of them due to the horrid side effects they contained. When she mentioned my cholestorol levels especially the LDL being high she made a pact with me. I'm to spend the next three months trying to reduce the total to 200 or less by natural means before we contemplate medication for it. Meanwhile I think I'll up my magnesium intake to see if that helps the RLS any. My Father and Grandma were Australian and Grandma was the one who treated us with home remedies unless it was obviously something that called for a doctor. She used to dose us with something called Spirits of Nitre for fever which she called " Little Girl's Gin " mixing it with sugar and water. God, I loved my Grandma! The sun is shining here in Poultney, Vermont and we've been promised a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. I'm waiting now for my son to arrive home for a week's vacation and we're going up to my daughter's tomorrow so the weekend does indeed look promising (that is if I can convince Mr. Biggles to behave properly!) CHEERS!! Jeanne and Mr. Biggles in Poultney VT

Guest guest
Good Morning Everyone, I use home remedies (mainly ones I learned from my grandmother). I did not say that " natural " and " homeopathic " treatments can not be useful - I did not dismiss them. I have simply met a number of people who think " natural " (which would have to be defined in each case for each person) is superior to " manmade " - PERIOD. I said I had tried a number of " natural " remedies. It occurred to me that in addition to Kava Kava, I have also found an arthritis pain ointment (purchased at a natural foods) store to be helpful - arinica gel (I think that's the name of it?). I do not need lectures in elementary biology and physiology as I have a solid background in the biological and physical sciences. (Sorry but whoever responded with that " lecture " seemed to be of the mind that I needed to be educated - perhaps I am being oversensitive as that message was quite informative, etc.). Finally there are controls over OTC medications - the factories are inspected and have to comply with good manufacturing practices (the law). If the meaning behind the potential for contamination of OTC meds referred to some psycho tampering- that could happen with any product. At this point, I am going to take a couple of days off from reading rls e-mail. I think I may even delete all new mail that comes while I am taking a break - that is without reading any of it. I think I have been talking too much lately and I'm getting kind of edgy - but then I haven't had any sleep. Lack of rest can get to you. Anyhow, I respect everyone's right to choose - I encourage eveyone to explore and learn and take care of themselves (you better look after yourselves!) I have experienced bad reactions (very bad) to prescription medicine and been the recipient of shall we say misdirected care. But no one is perfect (not any doctors and not even me - JOKE). Whatever works for you - and produces the least side effects or complications - I don't care if you buy it from a practitioner of wicca (I did this in New Orleans once). We all have to be our own physicians to a great extent. I hope all of you are getting lots of zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's. Take it easy!
