Guest guest
I don't trip and fall as much as I used to but I think it's because I am so careful not to. I do have trouble on carpet in restaurants if it is not laying out flat. Sometimes they don't stretch it good and there will be a hump in it. I just have to really watch where I'm going. I've tripped and threw food across the room before. Of course I always act COOL and blame it on the carpet. Hey, someone has to take the blame. Guest guest
Hi, Gretchen ... I have noticed that over the past few months I have a tendency to drag my right foot ... I kind of catch my toe as the foot is coming forward during a step. Its not serious at this point, but I think that is where the tripping comes from. It is now pronounced enough that I notice the dragging. What is " foot drop? " Is it this dragging?

Guest guest
Hi Gretchen and all. When I was between 5 and 8 was when I did my most falling. I was diagnoised at age 5 due to the fact that I would trip and fall all the time over thin air. Then at age 8 I had my 1st surgery and was put into metal springed braces. This helped alot with the falling. It didn't stop it, but it helped. Then when I stopped being a kid (you know going out and goofing off with your school mates), and I got a FT job at age 17 I tripped even less. Of course I wasn't being as active either. I could still trip over thin air. Now at age 39 I have to be careful for the fatigue. Most of the time when I fall it's due to being tired or stressed or hurried. I hate the falls, so very scary. Guest guest
Gretchen: Interesting topic... The funny thing is that in some ways my balance seems worse than it did before, but I seem to trip and fall less. Maybe it's just that I am more attuned to my CMT symtpoms recently, especially since the mail group. I think part of it is that I've been exercising more the past few years and I've also become more used to my lack of balance. I think the exercise helps the rest of me stay flexible and strong so that I can right myself faster and easier when I feel like I'm going to fall. I also think that I'm just more prepared for the possibility. When I have fallen and hurt myself in the past few years it has mostly been when I was doing something impulsive and careless like running without my AFO's (seriously injured my hand that way five years ago). I'm interestd in others' thoughts on this too. : ) Marti.

Guest guest
I use to fall alot. I would trip just to trip, it seemed. Sometimes if I was not paying attention to what I was doing I would trip. Since the AFO's, I hardly trip at all. I have tripped a few times in the splint, mainly because I was walking to fast. Boy, you do fly when wearing the AFO's. Can't seem to catch yourself. Terry tripping/falling? Has anyone's propensity to tripping/and or falling changed, over time, either you don't trip much now anymore, or you do trip more now? My own trips seem to be much less than even 15 years ago. Gretchen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wish you had something rad to add to your email? Guest guest
Definitely, a bump/raise on the floor if you do not see it can be awful. If you are watching your step (as alot of CMT'ers do) there is less likelihood of tripping. Terry Re: tripping/falling? Guest guest
Oh, yeah! That's foot drop! For me, it always happens so unexpectedly that I have no chance to catch myself. Usually it's my head that takes the worst of it! Also worse when I'm tired, because my reflexes are even worse. Good luck with managing your CMT. It's tricky! > Hi, Gretchen ... > > I have noticed that over the past few months I have a tendency to drag my > right foot ... I kind of catch my toe as the foot is coming forward during a > step. Guest guest
I think that as we get older, we become more aware of what makes us trip and fall, and we are careful to try to not put ourselves in that position. I always make sure I am near something to hold on to. If not My husbands arm is available. I use a cane to steady myself as well. Guest guest
Hello the House, You know now that you mention it, I don't trip like I used to. On the other hand I don't do the physical things I used to either, less active. I can credit that to the age factor I guess. E
