Hi Fellow CMTers

I read the Email from & concerning filling for

Social Security Disability. I myself hate paperwork, but I applied for Social

Security. The paper work is not that bad, but make sure you have medical

documents from your doctors. Social Security will probably turn you down the

first time. When I applied I had two disabilities 3 clogged arteries of the

heart (I had 2 heart attacks) and CMT. Social Security had me see their

doctors and turned me down. I got a lawyer to file my second request, which

is really unnecessary. The lawyer really didn't do anything except send me

the forms for a second request. I had to take these forms to SS The lawyer

also wanted to charge up to 25% of the lump sum that SS would send me. I had

to see the doctors from SS a second time and provide medical evidence again.

The neurologist that examined me from SS was the same neurologist that told

me I had CMT about 20 years earlier. When he was examining me for SS he told

me that I now have a curvature of the spine, but also said I did not need SSD

I told him that I could have applied for SSD 20 years ago but kept on working

and now that I need it you don't want to give it to me. I gave him a few

choice words (@#$%*&@) which I won't repeat here. I also stated that a kid on

my block was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Syndrome and was receiving SSD

and advised him that this kid never worked a day in his life, and neither did

his mother. The kid I believe does not have ADS, he is just a spoiled brat,

he is a very intelligent kid. I said if this kid is getting SSD, then I

deserve it. I have been working and paying into the system since I was 13

years old, I'm 47 now. I let this doctor know that I was not going to take no

for an answer. I am now receiving SSD. The point is you paid into the system,

now that you need it, it should be there for you. Don't take no for an

answer. The paper work is the least thing to worry about, making the doctors

realize that you need SSD, and is entitled to it is the hardest part of

getting SSD. I wish you the best.

Hi, this is Jeanie

I applied for SSD when I was 29. My CMT was no longer just in my legs, it had

gone into my hands and I had trouble picking up a coffee cup. So after

talking again with my Dr. she told me the next thing for me was to go onto

SSD.... She went to bat for me. She knew what needed to be done and she KNEW

that I qualified for it.... She sent me to a Neurologist because she knew I

would be turned down without the proof coming from him also. He did nerve

conduction tests on my hands. He didn't on my legs because they could see

the condition of my legs with my walk and how hard it was for me to get up

and down.

Whenever I walked into my Neurologist office he said YOU DON'T LOOK DEAD....

I questioned him.... He said to get onto SSD you had to be dead. After all

the tests he looked at me and told me not to worry that he knew the correct

words to put on the paper work to make it go thru the 1st time... IT DID!!!!!

If your DR's leave ANY question that you MIGHT be able to work part time or

some... You will be denied.... They have to put UNABLE TO WORK ANY JOB!

As far as I know:

As far as SSI goes.... You can't own anything...... Your car has to be of a

certain age in order to own a car. You can't have a Home your buying or have

money in the bank. You can be renting, but you can't own (doesn't make any

sense to me).

Take care, Jeanie

I have SSI, I Have a home were buying, I have a car, not old. I don't have

much money in the bank account or savings, but it goes by your income.

Assets are things you can sell you don' t need. Another home, extra autos,

things like that. If you have a car, and your spouse has one that is used

for work by them, then its not counted. But if you have a motor home,

boats, jet skis, I think they fall under usuable income, (assets) I think.

But you will never know if you qualify if you don't apply! ~>Becky M.

That is exactly how I feel. It is not like they are giving me something, I

have worked and payed in the money and I feel that it is mine. I am trying to

get my SSD now. I am only 33 but I have worked for 17 years and I have paid

in money all that time. I Know people who have never worked and are drawing

and some of them are much more capable of working than I. Danieta

To Al and everyone else,

I totally agree with you. I applied, for Social Security, the second time

last month. Mind you I too have been putting into the system since I was 15.

I am now 41. I was turned down the first time because , although I walk

slowly and I fall alot, the fact that I can still walk.... They also said

that, even though I have severe weakness in my hands and can't manipulate

small objects, I can manipulate large objects, thus I can work. I've been

unemployed for awhile and believe me, discrimanation is alive and well. I get

sick of the phrase, " We'll call you " . and they don't. I have called back

those places I really wanted to work at and they say they'll call me if any

positions open up. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get off the subject. I am

finding it hard to get SS. I hope this time, they will accept the facts, and

give me the money I've put in. Like Al, I've known for years, about the CMT

and yes, I could have put in years ago, but I truely believe in working, and

I have. The nursing profession is demanding, but it has its rewards. No one

asks for CMT, including me, but there comes a time when you have to finally

say, I have to start living for myself and taking care of me and that I

deserve more than going to work everyday and coming home and sitting and

crying because my feet hurt so bad and not be able to take care of my

family, because I'm so tired. My family deserves better. Do I feel sorry for

myself? Yes, and I'm proud of that, but I don't let it control my life. There

are alot of people out there, some within my own family that are worse off,

and I feel sorry for them too. I feel sorry for all of you, and all the pain

you are all going through, But like I said, it doesn't control my life. I

just try, in this group to offer suggestions, and comfort where I can. I

known I've become drawn out and off the subject, but, the comments, I've read

over the last few days have clogged up my head and I had to write about

them. About Social Security, I'll keep you all informed.

You are all super people and I am grateful to be a part of such an

intelligent group. I have become a better person, through all of you,

Kindness and Love be your companion throughout your journey, Michele

Success or failure of getting SSD seems to depend on a person's

recommendation by his or her medical people. Make certain your doctors back

you up and understand you can NOT work and specifically why you can't. Others

here who have gone through the system should help you. I've only read about

it. I've heard that some lawyers will help with SSD pro bono, but I know

nothing about that.

Get your doctors behind/beside you in this.

I too have applied for disability, am going to a doctor of their choice next

month. Just thought I would share with you what it says on some of my

paperwork that I received for Social Security Office in Nashville.

" Disability " under Social Security is based on your ability to work. For

purposes of this claim, we want you to understand that " disability " means

that you are unable to work as defined by the Social Security Act. You will

be considered disabled if you are unable to do any kind of work for which you

are suited and your disability is expected to last [or has lasted] for at

least a year or to result in death. So when we ask " when did you become

unable to work, " we are asking when you became disabled as defined by the

Social Security Act.

If the turn me down, and I'm sure they will, I [and all of you can do this

too] will use the phrase stating 'unable to do any kind of work for which you

are suited.'

Maybe this will help us all.

To get assistance, and some great help for SS contact Mike Finkelstien at

mike3736@... He will answer the questions you have.

<< Success or failure of getting SSD seems to depend on a person's

recommendation by his or her medical people. Make certain your doctors back

you up and understand you can NOT work and specifically why you can't.

Others

here who have gone through the system should help you. I've only read about

it. I've heard that some lawyers will help with SSD pro bono, but I know

nothing about that. >>

<< As far as I know:

As far as SSI goes.... You can't own anything...... Your car has to be of a

certain age in order to own a car. You can't have a Home your buying or

money in the bank. You can be renting, but you can't own (doesn't make any

sense to me).

Take care, Jeanie >>

I own a nice house. I own 2 cars. I did not have a loan on my old house. As

in paid off. Both of my cars were paid off too. This is the deal you can own

your own house. You can own cars. I have a 1999 van, They don't count that

one. They count my husbands older Camaro as an asset. You can have money in

the bank just not over the assets you are allowed. We sold the paid off house

and put most of the money down on this house. That is still fine. As long as

the money goes to your home.
