Hands Basically the anatomy of the hands and feet is very similar. A classic CMT hand tends to have hollows where there should be muscle bulk - at the base of the thumb, both back and palm of the hand, and between the tendons on the back of the hand controlling the fingers. It also can tend to curl, as the muscles which allow the fingers to straighten waste, allowing the stronger palm muscles to pull the fingers into a fist. Try to keep the fingers flexible. The best way of coping with the lack of muscle power in the hands is to acquire a range of gadgets to suit you that can replace the need for fine manual dexterity and strength - such as button hooks, gadgets for helping take jar lids off, electric can openers etc. Your Occupational Therapist should be able to help in obtaining items such as these.
