Guest guest
LARGE PORTIONS MAKE YOUR STOMACH AS BIG AS YOUR EYES: Piling up generous servings makes you eat more. Many adults are still following Mom and Dad's exhortations to clean their plates, particularly obese individuals, according to Dr. Barbara Rolls, professor of nutrition at the Pennsylvania State College of Health and Human Development. " We've found that even lean young men, who in general regulate their food intake well, ate more when they were given larger portions, " said Rolls. In one study, male subjects were given a macaroni and cheese lunch on three separate occasions. When the researchers gave them 16 ounces, they ate 10 ounces. If the researchers gave them 22 ounces, they ate 13 ounces. When the subjects received a jumbo plate of 25 ounces, they ate 15 ounces--50 percent more than when they were given the 16-ounce portion. Restaurants are overdoing it, too, with pasta bowls holding more than two pounds, for example. A plate of steak or fish that weighs more than a pound is no longer unusual restaurant fare. At the movies, a " medium " popcorn holds 16 cups (with up to 1,000) calories. When nutritionists refer to a serving size of ice cream, they mean half a cup, but a commercial scoop is three to four times' that. Rolls's advice for self-defense against the invasion of the humongous helpings includes buying the smallest package of goodies like chips or cookies, or dividing up larger packages into single-serving baggies or containers. When making a large batch of a dish that can be frozen, store it in single-serving freezer/microwave containers, so you can make a portion-controlled meal in minutes.
