Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I have a 8 month old grandson who I suspect has RLS. He has a very difficult time getting to sleep. His left leg is constantly moving. I babysat over the week end and the only way I got him to sleep was to massage his left leg. When he finally fell asleep he would jerk awake every so often. Does anyone know wether or not if it has ever been documented that a child this young can have RLS. My family thinks I'm over reacting that he's just fighting his sleep. I truely believe it's RLS. Anybody else have anyone this young suffering. I really could use some feedback on this. Thanks Jan/IL

The good news is that I think that they are finally starting to do sleep studies in children and yes, even infants. The bad news is that RLS per se can't really be diagnosed by sleep study alone, you know. How can a 3 year old describe the symptoms of RLS? Tough one! Good luck! RAINBOWPED@... Guest guest
Dear Jan, I also suspect that my 3-year-old granddaughter has had RLS since she was a newborn. Since she was born, she has always had difficulty going to sleep and when she is half asleep, looks just like I feel when I have RLS symptoms. She stretches and kicks and whimpers and looks like she just can't get comfortable. She sleeps much better now, but I am still seeing those symptoms when she is sleeping.....just not as severe. My daughter hasn't always had the same pediatrician because they have moved a couple of times, and now that it seems to be better, I don't believe she has mentioned it to her present doctor. I do believe, however that it is RLS. Cindy Stier Director of Outreach RLS Foundation 4410 19th Street NW, Suite 201 Rochester, MN 55901-6624 Re: RLS in infants From: JANWILS@... Guest guest
Hi, Wow! Thanks for writing in about these little ones. I'm trying to collect information on people's experiences with children and RLS so that I might be able to put together a brochure that the Foundation can send out to pediatricians, parents, and expectant parents. I really wished something existed when we got pregnant last year (and I still wish), so I've decided to try to write something. I am really worried about our daughter as my husband clearly remembers having RLS as a child. For her first three months (she is now six months), she jerked and woke herself up every time she was just on the edge of sleep. She looked so much like her dad falling asleep that it was scary. At the moment, she seems to have out grown it and we are trying hard to teach her good sleeping habits. With the research I've done so far, the consensus seems to be to follow Dr. Picchietti's recommendations from the chapter in " Sleep Thief " . That is, stick to a sleep schedule and if you can't always get quality sleep use the strict sleep schedule to get quantity. In April, a few people told me about how they help their children to cope. I'm hoping that more people will let me know. BTW, I am trying to work on the brochure. This new baby thing has just got me a little busy. Guest guest
It does make it tough as she is too young to describe her symptoms. I am just glad that her symptoms seem to be decreasing and she is getting more sleep. My daughter and son-in-law may not have to do anything about this if she continues to improve. Nothing has been done about it in the past because no one really knew what to do about it and her doctors weren't really concerned. Perplexing?!
