Normal hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin (Hgb) levels vary among laboratories

and methods of determination (in other words, what is your local labs normal

range). However, in general, anemia is present in adults (12 yo are

essentially considered adults for lab purposes) when the Hct is reproducibly

less than 42% in men or 37% in women or when the Hgb level is less than 14%

in men or 12% in women.

A few insider secrets: several " simple " factors can cause a " false " decrease

in the Hct include volume overload, supine position (lying down during blood

draw), automated techniques, etc.

A " simple & single " Hgb or Hct alone is not sufficient to diagnose anemia.

You should really do a complete blood count (CBC) and a manual smear, along

with a reticulocyte count, serum iron, serum ferritin and other tests to

" accurately " diagnose anemia.

IMHO
