A few insider secrets: several " simple " factors can cause a " false " decrease in the Hct include volume overload, supine position (lying down during blood draw), automated techniques, etc. A " simple & single " Hgb or Hct alone is not sufficient to diagnose anemia. You should really do a complete blood count (CBC) and a manual smear, along with a reticulocyte count, serum iron, serum ferritin and other tests to " accurately " diagnose anemia.
