I was 18 years old when I had my first EMG - Hurt like crazy - the whole

time and they did a all over - both legs and both arms. Thought I was going

to die before they got done! But - was real strange - I cried the rest of

the day and most of the next day. Was real emotional, and had no reason to

be. Finally figured it must have had something to do with all that

electricity that they bounced around in me. I might also mention, the Nerve

Conduction Study hurts just as bad on me. My doctor was so understanding,

and would get over with real quick so I didn't suffer more - and he told me

I was the only one (and he gives them all the time for years) that the test

hurt! These great CMT nerves!!! Most people don't seem to hurt from these

tests, but if your nerves don't work right, guess that is when it hurts

more.

When I got my EMG done at the University of Minnesota,

Minneapolis, I cried like you WOULD not believe!! I

got bit by a dog when I was thirteen, and the EMG has

excelled to the top of the list of " The Most Painful

Things I Have Ever Had To Go Through. "

(shudder shudder) That was one experience I NEVER

want to repeat!!

I might as well throw my two cents in as to the EMG. I have had two done

the first about 5 years ago and the other one done last year. I feel weird

saying this but I really did not mind it at all. Maybe my nerves are so dead

they can't feel anything! I can't believe how different we all are but we

all have the same disease.

Me too! I just had one EMG, 1993, and it was almost a non-event for me. I was

curious about it, and I watched the movements on the monitor, but I felt

virtually nothing. I could SEE that she was sticking tiny needles in my legs

and ativating them, but there was no pain. I assumed it was how acupuncture

would be.

When I left I remember commenting that I hoped my legs didn't leak from all

the holes.

A couple of years later when I started meeting CMTers online, and hearing

their EMG horror stories I realized how fortunate I had been.

I hate to frighten new people because we don't know how their EMGs will be.

I've since been told if one is afraid and tense it is much worse, too. It's

like telling birthing horror stories to a pregnant woman!!!! Or telling

horrible doctor stories to a person who is about to undergo surgery. This

isn't a criticism, just a comment about how run my own life.

I agree, our experiences with EMGs are another example of how differently we

are affected by our CMT.

The EMG awoke my dead nerves from the grave.
