Guest guest
When taking Neurontin, if you see black spots call your doctor right away. Posts in the MGH forum describe people who have taken Neurontin for more than a couple of years and who now have major problems with their teeth. They haven't even mentioned the patients who gain weight yet. It may seem as if I'm against Neurontin, but I'm really not. I've had no experience with it, I just read and hear a lot. I realize that for the people for whom Neurontin works, it is marvelous. One person says it helps reduce severe itching, by the way. Everyone needs to remember that nothing seems to be right or safe for everyone. We are all so very different in so many ways. CMTers often need lower doses of medications than the average person for example, but of course not always. Exercise is another thing that varies widely with CMTers. People who can do it do not understand people who can not. If CMT is anything, it's inconsistent. Kat in Seattle USA A good way to judge people is by observing how they treat those who can do them absolutely no good.
Guest guest
Hi Rose - Marie, Neurontin is also known as Gabapentin, your doctor might know it by that name. It took me three days to get up to my daily dose, increasing one capsule each day. While I had definitely more energy even on the 2nd day, by the 3rd day and the 3rd capsule, I was groggy and spent most of the day sleeping. It is hard to get started on it. It helps about 2/3 of the people who take it. The first 1/3 are called " instant responders " , that means, it helps right away, the next 1/3 of people are helped by about the 4th month, then there is the last group where it doesn't seem to help at all. It greatly helped me with the burning, electrical type shooting nerve pain that would circulate in me like lightening and then leave. My feet can still hurt, especially if I stand too much. But they have always hurt like that. You might also ask your doctor about Elavil, also known as amitriptyline. It is an older medication, originally used for depression, but also helps nerve pain. It also makes you groggy at night so sleep is natural. Elavil DID cause me to gain weight, but Neurontin didn't. I'll find some info. and post later.
