Guest guest
Hi group, Lately I've noticed a resurgence of interest in Folic acid, as the supplement du jour. Since our local health food store was running a special on 1/2 price 800 mcg. bottles, I picked up a couple. My questions for you all are: 1. Has anyone read anything about Folic acid and RLS? 2. Has anyone noticed any improvement after taking Folic acid? If so, how long and how much? (Yes, Jill, I do remember you telling about it...I forgot the dosages though). 3. If I experiment with dosages, is there a toxicity threshold that I should be aware of (like with Vitamin A). How about side effects of high dosages? Thanks and have a great day. Guest guest
Jeff: I haven't seen anyone reply to query about RLS and Folic acid, so I'll give you my input about it. I see it mentioned from time to time, but the only place I see it right now is in the book: Prevention's Healing with Vitamins (Rodale Press, 1996). On page 482, under Restless Leg Syndrome, they suggest Folic acid at 5000-20000 micrograms per day. They further say that " deficiency of this nutrient appears to be associated with restless legs problems in a small percentage of people " . On page 483 they say further that " if folic acid is going to help your problem, it should do so within a few weeks...Since the Daily Value for folic acid is only 400 micrograms, you should talk to your doctor before taking a higher amount. High doses of folic acid can mask the symptoms of pernicious anemia, a condition caused by a deficiency of vitamin B-12 " . I recommend that you get the book from your library and read the whole article if you're interested. I haven't personally tried this. Regards, Don in Albuquerque, NM, also without much in the way of winter so far.
