Like ne, my rls is helped a some by smoking but I think it helps the

stress of rls and has a calming effect. I have to tell you, someone I know,

a non-smoker, is forever sharing with me things she reads or hears about the

horrors of smoking. 'The latest was that boys born of mothers who smoked

during pregnancy were more apt to be criminals later on in life. This was

supposedly a research study. I know men whose mothers' smoked and they are

not criminals. I take most smoking warnings seriously and truly want to

quit, however, this latest is ridiculous.

i read that study a while ago and since i've a great fear of developing

parkinson's disease i've increased my smoking up to 5 packs a day - its

pretty much a full time job just puffing away........i've not noticed any

parkinson's symptoms but i can't breathe very well.

actually i still smoke (my only bad habit) and hadn't noticed any changes

in my rls symptoms while smoking or while on the patch in my abortive

attempts to quit. however i'm sure our group will report a whole range of

different reactions as we do with any other drug or alternative therapy.

, Jack & those interested,

I quit smoking 16 years ago, but the way I feel right now (at 5

o'clock in the afternoon), with my right arm and leg jerking

incessantly, and feeling quite nauseous, I'd probably " light up " , if I

thought it would help.

Hi All,

Well I smoke, and I do notice that if my legs are bothering me, the

symptoms are relieved by lighting up. This is not a permanent solution

however, and obviously causes health problems more serious than RLS.

BTW, I read somewhere that smokers are less likely to develop Alzheimers

- when I mentioned this to someone (a non-smoker), he replied that this

was probably because we don't live long enough to get it!

I smoke too and I agree with you that the symptoms are relieved but, I think

it's because you have something else to concentrate on for a few minutes. If

this is a true deal then at least I can shut my Mother-in-law up about my

smoking.....I'll tell her I am doing my part to prevent myself from getting

parkinson's. ;)

i remember reading about that study also - another example of how

statistics can be somewhat misleading unless they are analyzed a bit

further.......the reason for this statistical outcome is that as a general

rule smokers come from the poorer less educated portion of our population

and this is the part of our population that also commits the most crimes -

statistically speaking.

Hi, :

In answer to your query re. smoking and RLS, I quit smoking three years ago

this past January after smoking approximately 30 years. I quit " cold turkey "

and giggled at everything for a month or so (more like pure hysteria, no

doubt), but I could not tell any difference one way or another concerning my

RLS.
