Guest guest
Dear " Ferritin lady " and group' The research on Ferritin levels and RLS bears out my situation. I've been severely afflicted with RLS for quite a long time but for some reason neither my first neurologist or primary doc thought to check out a Ferritin level. This is interesting in light of the fact that gastrectomy patients commonly exhibit absorption problems....and I had a two thirds gastrectomy about 38 yrs ago! Even though I have been seeing a second neurologist now for months, it has taken this long to realize a Ferritin check might be significant. Sure enough, my level is really extremely low (2ng/ml!) I have problems tolerating most meds but am now on replacement therapy , taking it three times a week but at a slightly lower dose . I understand it usually takes weeks to months before the level is normal again.Incidentally, the first doc discovered I had a low B12 level and I've been getting monthly injections. My med therapy for RLS is Requip (a Parkinson type Rx) and Tylenol with Codeine. This has been effective for several months, but wouldn't it be wonderful if the iron problem was the main culprit?! ( I have a sack of stuff that made me ill or didn't work!) It seems to me that checking vit.B levels and Ferritin should be standard protocol for treating RLS patients. Thanks " ferritin lady " for bringing this to everyone's attention. Windtree/, 60,Wis. P.S. Sounds like there are a lot of nicer places to be than Wis right now!
