Dear ,

I think everyone has a different reason for

using a scooter/wheel chair. I don't use one yet. I'm

at the point where if I'm somewhere that is going to

be lots of walking,I either don't go or I sit down in

between. I use the shopping cart at some stores to

lean on. It's funny to see me and my son with 2

baskets and 1 item of purchase. I've just recently

been experiencing the tired feeling. Some one wrote in

here that it takes CMTers 3 times as much energy to do

something as some one without-I believe that. Simple

tasks just wear me out.

Why do some people wsith cmt have to use a wheelchair?

Hello everybody,

I have got a question about why some people with cmt have to use a

wheelchair or scooters. Is it because their body is so exhausted so they

have no strength to walk or ist because some muscles of the legs don' t

work anymore and that is why they are not able to walk.

Bye,

from Germany

True, and some have severe scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

Hi ...I don't have an exact answer to why I need to use a wheelchair,

but this is why I reluctantly used it at first. When I was 29-years old, I

took a bad fall and broke my right ankle...though I used a walker for a

number of years before then, I found I didn't get much of anything done...I

was too tired after walking only a very short distance. So after I broke my

ankle my CMT progressed quickly...I took so many bad falls...I've had a black

eye twice!...so I use the chair to conserve energy and to prevent falls.

I've found that using the wheelchair has some advantages...I can now go

shopping all day if I want, and whoever is with me doesn't have to carry

packages...they just pile on my lap...lol...so I can be of help, too. I

don't know for certain if there is a lack of muscle in my legs, but I do tend

to feel very weak and unsteady if I don't use the chair. In the apartment I

use my walker and find it easier to be barefoot...Bye for now...Kathleen from

Hi , I am 39 and I can walk in my home without my arm crutch, instead I

use the walls and furniture. I only take 3 to 4 steps without help. My

balance isn't good enough to support me past the 3 to 4 steps. I also have a

scooter and electric wheelchair. I have only had the electric wheelchair

since December of 1999. Before that I would use my electric scooter when I

went shopping. My legs would get to tired if I attempted to do shopping

without my scooter, and I the pain from walking would be much worse for my

feet and legs if I did to much walking.

Now that I have the electric wheelchair I find myself being able to do my

shopping by walking. (One store a day of course.)

When I walk in my home it is very hard on my back, legs and feet. For some

reason if I do to much wandering around doing housework my legs hurt me more

than going shopping at a store.

So at home I now use an electric wheelchair for almost everything.... It has

a power lift seat that raises me straight up about 6 to 7 inches. I can now

do housework without the pain or fear of falling, and I have the strength now

to cook my family's dinner at night.... before the electric wheelchair we

went out to eat because I couldn't handle the pain of standing and cooking

and then cleaning up. I still make sure I use my legs so that they won't

atrophy any faster than normal.

My dad (Dean) uses a wheelchair 80% of the time because his legs are not

strong enough to hold him at all. He only uses his arm crutches (2) to walk

down his narrow hallway or to walk 40 feet to his van. He has a scooter in

the van and a wheelchair for in the house.

Hope this helps explain it some. Jeanie

Hi , I am 46 years old, and I am amblatory at home. I too use walls and

furniture to keep my balance. I do my own cooking sitting on a stool in the

kitchen, and I can't clean all in one day. When I am out I use my scooter

because I get real tired and in a great deal of pain if I try to walk. I am

afraid of people bumping into me and knocking me down. I have a van with an

arm lift, so I am very independant. Hope this helps. Martha

Hi my name is Cathy and I'm new. I decided just last week to get a scooter

and it's because I've gotten to the point that shopping is extremely painful

and exhausting. My daughter's getting married in a few weeks and all the

shopping we've been doing has been rough, but it's something that I really

want to do so I just hung in there. But I've finally realized that I could

do so much more with a scooter and that I would enjoy outings instead of

dreading them.

Hi Cathy, welcome.

I think you've made a smart decision. Why wear yourself out when you don't

have to!

Have you chosen which type you want? They vary a lot. Will your car have

room?

I'm in Seattle. What part of the world do you live in?

I have a Amigo Deluxe. My first Amigo I had used for six years and I am on

my second new Amigo. The original one is now in my home only and I have the

new one in my van. This elimates one loading and unloading which helps.

MDA paid $1,700.00 toward purchase each time. You have $1,700.00 available

to you every five years toward purchase of braces or scooters. MDA offer

$300.00 per year for repairs (not batteries though which last about 1-1/2

yrs.) I have a power seat lift. There is a representative in New Orleans I

think. Check out http://www.myamigo.com The Amigo is the top of the line

manufacturer. I have only had minor problems with my scooter and the

service is excellent. Tell them I recommended you to them and I'll get a

$50.00 credit toward any future service work. I only recommend Amigo from

my seven years of pleasure in their product. The scooter gave me back my

life. Donna Garland, TX (I got mine from Grand Prairie, Texas)

Donna,

Is MDA paying for braces now? They use to pay for them, but I was told they

stopped paying for them. I'm due for new braces but was holding off because

of the deductable I had to pay.

, MDA pays for my Braces. If you are on Social Security, you can get

Medicare. They will pay for them as well.

In Dallas, Texas, they are giving MDA patients $1,700.00 every five years

either toward braces or wheelchairs/scooters.
