Guest guest
Kim, I agree with . If you are new to a diagnosis, it will take you a while to absorb everything. Emotions will run high for quite a while. This is normal. But you have a friendly community here who has LOTS of experience living with the disease. Please don't discount the value of AFOs (or braces). I fought the idea myself for quite a while but went ahead and got them when my knees started to collapse out from under me without warning because the lower leg muscles were getting too weak to support me all day. While I don't like them as a fashion statement (I am a 41 yr old mom), I LOVE the fact that they are keeping me on my feet and able to keep up (mostly) with my 3 active young daughters. The alternative (not keeping up) would be unacceptable at this point. So for me, they are a relatively minor solution to a large problem! My AFOs insert inside a sneaker and run up the back of the leg to my knee. There are a variety of styles of orthotic aids. Are you currently seeing doctors familiar with CMT? Keep in touch with us here.
