RLS and Surgery

Dear Group Members-

Having just joined this list last week, I've been reading the posts

regarding trauma-induced RLS. While I am not in the position to comment

on this, I just thought I'd relay something that happened to me.

I have had RLS for as long as I can remember - though, until being

recently dx'd, I just passed it off as jumpy legs, lack of a decent diet,

boredom, whatever. I know better now. Anyway... 7 years ago I had jaw

surgery for damage done from TMJD. I was under anesthesia for 9 hours.

A day or two later, when I was able to get out of bed I noticed a massive

blister on my right heel. I mentioned it to my doctor, who apparently

checked with the recovery staff. One of the nurses commented on how

jumpy my legs were, and as I was coming out of anesthesia, my legs just

would not stop moving. Hence the blister. Funny thing, no one had seen

this happen before, and I had all sorts of medical professionals in my

room to take pictures of this stupid blister. Then, this past September,

I had another operation. Though not under as long, the same thing

happened when I was in recovery - the nurses were just so surprised that

my legs moved so much. The funny thing this time was that I had my first

sleep study just a week before the surgery. I guess, looking back, what

surprises me now is that no one mentioned this. Makes me think that the

medical profession is horribly undereducated.

Has anyone else had this happen after surgery?

Kathy - 34/KY
