Guest guest
I don't remember being made fun of all too much - most of the kids I went to school with knew I had some sort of problem and didn't say too much. (I went to a small school so you pretty much knew everybody.) In fact I even remember a few words of encouragment from other kids if I would finish the mile run or whatever... What I get more of is the question " What did you do to your leg - you're limping... " I don't even get that much anymore with the AFOs because they are a pretty obvious sign something is wrong. Guest guest
Funny..................I have had many people ask me if I hurt my leg..........they noticed I was sort of limping. With the AFO's my gait is so much better that people don't even know anything is wrong.........however, sometimes people have asked me if I hurt my leg even with the AFO's, perhaps it is when my legs are tired and my walking gets sloppy. Without the AFO's, I would never be able to work or do much of anything because it would be too difficult to get around. The AFO's are a blessing, I am so thankful that they give me the freedom that I need to carry on and do the things I need/and want to do. being made fun of >Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 09:09:53 -0800 > > > >Has anyone been made fun of because of the way you walk? Guest guest
yes as a matter of fact I did have a guy try, not a real smart fella, he thinks he is funny. take into account iam 35 years old 6' 200 lbs, he was walking towards me and started limping a bit and smiling, when he got to me I asked him if he hurt himself and he just smiled and I said you must have because a smart guy like you wouldn't poke fun at a guy that could brake your scrawny little neck! and that was that. my way may not be the best way to handle such a thing but my temper does get the best of me, bringing to mind a question for all, does CMT have an effect on a persons temper? (hot headed)? TONY being made fun of > > >Has anyone been made fun of because of the way you walk? Guest guest
Hi all! I have had CMT 2 all my life (I was diagnosed at age 3), so I have a lot of memories about being teased as a child because of the way I walked and ran. The most vivid experience happened when I was in 1st grade. My parents worked very hard at helping me deal with my CMT by stressing that I was simply special and that all people were different in some ways. While I could not run as well as other kids, I knew I could do other things well instead. It got to a point that I would simply do the best I could and usually I forgot that I had CMT. Halfway through the school year, the boys in my class began to call me " Mommy-long-legs. " This was a continual taunt every recess and PE period. At the time I didn't really understand the teasing, though I realize now that the name probably originated from my height (I come from a very tall family) and my very thin, wasted legs. I probably did look a lot like a uncoordinated spider. Everyday for about 4 months I went home in tears about the teasing, but I showed them. During the year-end awards ceremonies, I received not only the " Most Improved Girl Athlete of the Year " for my class, I also won the " First Grade Sportsperson of the Year. " Those prizes meant a lot to me because they proved that it was the fact that I tried hard that was important, not the fact that I had a disabling condition. Today, the teasing seems different. It is not so much out in the open as it is with kids. I guess it is not really teasing but judgments and prejudices showing. Do any of you experience this? How do you handle it? Thanks for listening, Devin Ann --- Gretchen Glick liliwigg@...> wrote: > Has anyone been made fun of because of the way you > walk?
