Lamar, you used to wear the plastic AFO's and now you are wearing the

toe-offs?

Could you please describe the difference as to how it feels and how it helps

the foot/ankle, plus, do yuou still need to wear long socks with toe-offs and

do you still have to get a larger size shoe for the toe-off like you do for

the AFO's?

Can you please tell me the brand of socks you were describing and where to

find them I have the same problem and can't stand anything tight around my

legs. The AFO's are enough. I have always hated long socks and now must wear

them.

Jeanie, the Toe-off fits in front of the leg. It actually seems to give

MORE lateral support than my old AFO. It is smaller and thinner and

lighter. It does seem to improve my gait. It is some harder to put on some

high top shoes with it because it does not aid you like a big " shoe spoon " ,

but I can wear some shoes with it that I could not with my other one. I

wear one only on one foot, so I take the insole out of the shoe with either

to equalize the thickness. I still need long socks, but it is markedly

cooler. Prior to my last two surgeries on my back I was walking some with

it without my cane it helped so much. As for shoe size, I wear a 13-wide

either way; and some of those won't work due to lack of depth. I tried a 14

but they are too loose in the heel area as well as being very hard to find

and having a much higher cost. I have found hiking boots or the Dr. Scholls

with Velcro (under 30.00 at Wal-Mart) work good with either. My only

problem is finding socks large enough and long enough. I have large calves

and big thick feet. Most socks just fit up to a 12 shoe size. Most extra

size socks are too tight for my calves or too short. I have only found one

brand that really fit and they cost 8.00 to 10.00 a pair. I wear socks all

the time due to cold feet and when combined with the AFO they wear out

quickly. It's sickening to see others buy a dozen pair for what I have to

pay for one!!

The toe off is ready made and has virtually no adjustments except some may

need padding. My ortho. offered me the chance to try it and return if not

satisfactory. I do not know if all would. In short, it is better for me.
