Guest guest
I hate to get into this again, because last time it started quite a little battle (private), but I don't intend to partkae in it this time. First of all, if you were ever ADD. you still are. You do not outgrow it. You may learn coping skills and like any other problem, if you're lucky, the severity can lessen, BUT it does not go away. (Since you guys cannot hear my tone of voice, if it sounds like I am speaking harshly, I am not.) Ritalin, like al the meds we take, works different on everyone. My son took it for 5 years & would not take it again for anything (and yes, has shown signs of RLS) . I take it, but not at night. I can fall asleep in the daytime, right after taking it, but if I take it at night I am irritable and don't sleep at all. Yes, it helps my daytime problems, (with RLS) but like I said I can't take it at night. My son never slept well the years he was on it, but has had no trouble since then. It is definitely not somehing I would try for RLS if you don't need it for ADD, or any other " malady " your doc might prescribe it for. Again, just another " very friendly " IMO tidbit. Guest guest
My son is ADHD. In one of my desparate moments (RLS related) several years ago I tried one of his (10mg.) ritalin. It calms the RLS and even helps me to sleep. BUT the neurologist wouldn't prescribe it for RLS. So I take one only when necessary (long trips, meetings and desparate nights)(maybe once or twice a week) and have a supply by re-filling son's rx 1 week early each month.(which most health plans will cover). I just HAD to be ADHD as a child. My parents are gone now, but my sister and I agree that I was ADHD, as I still am. I have difficulty staying still. Of course, being a teacher is a good profession for that. I don't get to sit down often. I keep Ritilin for me, but don't need it very often. > > My sister was always the calm one, still is, and doesn't have RLS, but our mom did. My boys are ADHD, and both have RLS. My husband has PLMD and has been hyper all his life, too. So my kids really didn't have a chance if all this stuff is hereiditary, which I really think it is. > > Lindy B. in Southeast Texas > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > ONElist: where the world talks! > http://www.onelist.com > Join a new list today. > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > This forum is for support only. Guest guest
I find this experience very, very interesting. I am wondering why the neurologist was reluctant to prescribe it to you for RLS (because side effects??... which are probably fewer than dopamine agonists). Why to refuse such prescription to an adult when knowing that the same drug is prescribed for millions of chidren for ADHD? Guest guest
Hi Dimitrios, Ritalin is a medication that now most commonly is used to treat hyper-active children. Years ago it was used to help in treating depression also now some people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome take it to help them get through a day and fight fatigue. It has some stimulant properties, but when the children take it they calm down and can better focus on what they need to do. When I was given Ritalin in the 1960's, the neurologists thought that it would help me with the great fatigue I had. And it did, because of the stimulant in it. But, Ritalin never helped me with pain. Gretchen
