Gretchen, Lamar here,

Most find socks under AFO's are essential. The important thing is that

shoes must be worn. The bottom (sole) is as slick as glass. Attempting to

walk in them even when dry, without shoes, could be very dangerous. Water

won't hurt them. The straps are cloth and Velcro and dry quickly.

I was discussing with a fellow CMT'er last night that I did not know why an

AFO could not be made with a thin sole attached so that it could be worn at

the beach, pool, etc. It would need an additional strap over the foot like

a sandal. I have found that keeping my legs and feet dry and good skin care

prevents heat rash (I live in HOT, humid, south GA), Thick athletic socks

are essential for me. Getting them wet is fine, but keeping moisture in

contact with the skin for long periods is not good.

I will say that my AFO has become my best friend. When I got my first, I

cursed it. When I adapted to it, I found that it helped me more than

anything I had tried. I did get the new " Toe-Off " style a few months ago,

and like it even better.

waterproof AFOS ?

I used to wear plastic AFO's. Not only were they extreemly hot it the summer

time and cause me to get a severe rash, the bottom of them in my shoe caused

severe callouses. I now wear metal uprights attached to my shoes. I don't need

them for swimming. Up until a couple of years ago I would not wear shorts or

skirts. Then we went to Florida and I started wearing shorts. People stare, but

let them. I am comfortable.

Gretchen, I can get my AFO wet but don't, if I'm going to dangle my feet into

water I take my shoes and socks off first. I have no desire to have wet shoes

and socks. yucky feeling. As for the heat... During the summer the AFO's can

get very hot. SOmetimes when I take it off my sock will actually be damp

from the sweat. I wear knee high socks because the plastic sticks to my legs

if I don't.

The straps on my AFO's is velcro. Jeanie
