kayaking or canoeing?

My canoeing days were back in the 50s. We were supposed to kneel the whole

time, but most of us used the little seats instead. In order to go out in the

canoes we each had to pass a test of tipping our canoe over, then righting it

while we were way out in the lake. Since I didn't know how to swim it was

tricky for me, but I managed.

This was at a Girl Scout camp on Lake Coeur d' Alene in northern Idaho. A

couple of years later I had to do the same thing on Lake Winnipesaukee in New

Hampshire. I was a counselor, and this was how my friends and I were able to

see a lot of our states. I enjoyed the canoeing very much, but doubt that I

would now. My legs would cramp up too fast.

I imagine that anyone who has hands that tend to cramp would not do well with

canoeing or kayaking.

PS, I bought myself a full-sized paddle in New Hampshire, at a paddle

factory. I couldn't afford a canoe.

Anyone ever done kayaking or canoeing? With summer around the corner and

a lake nearby I want to try these maybe. I have good upper body

strength, but I don't know in what position your legs/feet are. I just

get restless if I can't move my legs/feet from time to time. Are these

'boats' like river rafts? I had no problem with those.

Hi Gretchen,

Our city rec. dept. offered a kayak excursion on a nearby bay. My husband &

I signed up for a double kayak. We got instruction & it seemed easy enough

but you need good coordination and good hand strength. You sit on a seat

with a short adjustable back rest with your legs straight out in front of

you. My hand grip is nil so I used mitts with velcro straps to fasten my

hands to the paddle. Not the safest thing but I can swim and tread water, so

can my husband. Also there were 14 others in the group. It was fun but

difficult because I couldn’t keep the paddle from rotating. Also in the

afternoon the water got very choppy & the tide was going out so the leader

tied all kayaks together for the trip to shore. Try it in a small lake or

pool first to get the hang of it in calm water. I had my crutches fastened

on the rear with bungee cords. Try it with a partner so if it doesn’t work

for you at least you won’t be stranded.
