I know that we have discussed this before, many restless moons ago; however, I think that we, as RLS sufferers, might, just might, get a little more respect and sympathy/empathy if the community (medical & public) referred to our syndrome by some other name like Ekbom Syndrome. I don't mind the syndrome part.......if we had a disease, people would think we were contagious or something.....like a social disease. Some of us already lack social skills enough already. As you know, Ekbom was a Swedish researcher who studied RLS in the 1940's. " Mr. One " RAINBOWPED@...

Guest guest
Hello, All! The term " Restless legs " syndrome is recognized internationally in the medical community for a good reason: " Restless legs " is THE descriptor (MeSH words) used to describe this syndrome in Medline, the internationally used US medical database. You may try to search for " restless legs " under the " MeSH Browser " at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/medline.html Another problem: Ekbom described various illnesses and the term Ekbom's syndrome is normally already reserved for a type of psychose, where patients have the certitude to be attacked by insects, vermins or small animals. Nothing to do with RLS. It is true that the term restless legs was badly chosen. The French term " Impatiences dans les jambes " is still worse, because it means impatient, and this term have a strong smell of psychopathology!!
