Delete please, if you aren't interested in a bit of history related to a

mysterious disability similar to CMT.

<< , what do you think about being told you had your affliction because

of past sins and if you believed enough you would be healed! Thats what my

minister said to me last year and I said BYE!!!!! >>

That was the common thought when one of my great aunts had an undiagnosed

progressive weakness from 1910 until she died in 1940 at age 66. Her minister

told her the same thing as yours did, Becky, and she was very religious. She

believed her weakening legs must be her fault because the minister said so.

In those days people, especially women, did not disagree with authority,

particularly men.

I have her journals describing having to crawl to get her chores done, (she

was a farmer), and not being able to get off the floor unless she had a chair

or something to help. Her hand/leg problems sound very much like CMT. After

decades of being told it was her fault she was finally diagnosed as having a

neuropathy in 1936. Her last couple of years were spent curled up on a bed,

unable to walk or crawl, but still with a bright mind.

My neuro says she didn't have CMT because she is on my dad's side, and my CMT

came from my mom's side. I still wonder about that opinion. She had no

children.

During her later years she wrote, and when she could no longer hold a pen she

dictated children's stories, some of which were published. I will be

publishing a set of 12 short stories, in her memory, along with the 12

illustrations that she had commissioned in 1936. They haven't been published

before.

Becky, I had hoped we were beyond the sort of thinking that was displayed by

your minister. It shows why some families are in denial about CMT, even

today. Often they were brought up to believe that we cause our own physical

ailments by misbehavior, and a physical problem that is passed down means

someone in a previous generation was bad. They don't understand genetics,

science, and all that goes with it. Too bad.

I hope you found a supportive, rational church to attend.

> Kat, your poor dear aunt! I can't imagine living in those days with CMT

or any other type of neuromuscular problems. And we think at times we have

it rough! Bless her heart, she thought it was her fault, well I know

better and thats why I left then and there! Yes I now attend a very caring

supportive church who cares about spreading the gospel, not your dress or

disabilites. >Becky M. >
