Guest guest
Hi , Check with your company/employer to see if they have Long Term Disability. A couple friends of mine with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome were able to have their company pay Long Term disability benefits while they waited for Social Security Disability Insurance to get approved. Also check with your State about State Disability. I can only speak for California but California has State Disability which also helps people with benefit payments while their Social Security Disability Insurance claims go through. California's State Disability is only one year, however. Remember, Social Security Disability Insurance doesn't show HOW disabled you are, or WHAT the disability is, all SSDI cares about is YOU CANNOT WORK. Make sure you talk to your doctor about this also. Your nearest Employment Development Department could tell you more about State Disability and IF your State has it. They should be listed in the phone book. I am not an attorney, so please don't take this as legal advice, but I do not think that an employers can " CAN " you simply because you cannot perform the work required since you have a disability. I think the employer has an obligation to find you something you can do for them. Like I said, I am not an attorney and I used to be completely " up to speed " on this kind of thing when I managed people! So, check with an attorney, or if that cost is out of the question, try Legal Aid, I think there are offices in the bigger cities. Maybe they can help you with some of this. I would encourage you to talk openly with your supervisor/boss/Human Resources people to see if you might be " retrained " (by your company) to do something else.
