Some doctors have an attitude about opiates that they are not necessary and just cause addicts and that people who are on opiates must be " strung out " . That is merely the attitude of some doctors, as other doctors realize that this is not true, that patients in pain do not for the most part become addicted, and that they need it for their pain so they can live a normal life. What seems like a huge dose of narcotic that nobody could function with to one person is barely a dent in the pain of another person. I am in constant pain and am on morphine ER. It does not affect me like it might to someone who is not used to narcotics. In fact, it is not usually given until a patient has worked their way up in dosage and tolerance of other less strong narcotics. And, what most people mistake for addiction is actually dependance, which means you cant just stop taking it, you have to be weaned off slowly, this applies to other drugs besides narcotics.
