Guest guest
Hey Everyone: I will be starting a new job soon and will be faced with the task of choosing a new health insurance plan. I understand that, these days, few plans are really " great " but I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me which ones are better than others and which to avoid at all costs. I will be working for the Federal Government and believe that I'll have at least four or five to choose from at varying costs. I don't know which ones I'll be able to choose from yet..... Any advice is appreciated. - Marti

I think they vary around the country, too. Kat

Guest guest
Marti, Lamar here Actually no one can advise you on this without more and personal information. My suggestion is to study each plan carefully. See what is covered and what is not. Compare any PPO vs HMO option. Compare cost. If you or any family member is covered by another policy or Medicare, check closely about coordination of benefits and which will be primary. Evaluate these things in comparison to what your medical bills have been. Consider hospitals, physicians, adaptive needs, medication, etc. Check if the doctors/hospitals you prefer are in network or out of network. Check for coverage of any preexisting condition (many cover new employees from day one) Compare all carefully and choose the best suited for you. Do NOT be afraid to check with the individual plans for more information. Most employers offer a chance to change policies yearly if you find your decision is not best. Most have a comparison guide that only shows so much. Do not make your decision lightly. The time and effort you spend could save you thousands. No one policy is best for every family situation. I have just had the opportunity to make a change in my State GA Retiree insurance. To complicate it, I am also covered under Medicare (primary for me) but my son is not and my insurance is primary for him, but his coverage is coordinated with his mother's policy (also state). It took over 2 weeks of checking for me to get all the information I needed, and I got some conflicting answers. Finally I got it in writing from a supervisor. I did make a change, that will save me over 100.00 a month in rates alone and should offer essentially the same or better coverage for me and my son. If my decision was wrong, I can change it in a year. Re: Insurance? > Hey Everyone: > I will be starting a new job soon and will be faced with the task of > choosing a new health insurance plan. Guest guest
I was a Health Care Management Consultant for years until this past January, when I had to stop working. I am familiar with the pre-existing laws, and all types of plans offered. Need advice? I'd be happy to help. Just tell me what is offered. Guest guest
Hi Aimee: I jave Blue Cross Blue Shield (PPO) and they covered my lower jaw with no hassle at all. I paid only the deduction. They did not cover my genioplasty. the OS sent all the letters and justification to the insurance folks - I didn't talk with them at all. Good luck. Guest guest
I had the same experience, Greta. (Although my dental BC/BS paid only $1250 or so of the orthodontics fee.) One caution, though. I think that BC/BS varies from state to state. Have you talked with your surgeon about insurance, and whether he has any suggestions? He's likely to know, or have someone in his office who does, the rep of the policies in your area.
